Easy way to gain more floor space in your salon.

Using the small cocktail table in our salon gave us extra floor space & walking room but we missed the large table top area. One day I took the table off the two pedestals, moved the table toward the bulkhead by matching the aft table flange with the forward pedestal. The table was then being supported by only one pedestal. This moved the table within ¾” of the bulkhead. With the table in the forward location I noticed that I could easily slide into the port settee, the bench could still be used, and I had a lot more floor space and walking room. We can even walk between the galley counter and the bench when someone is sitting on the bench at the table. If we could keep this much floor space all the time I wouldn’t need to store the small cocktail table onboard and I wouldn’t have to lug and store the large table to and from the aft cabin to gain the extra floor space or use the large table. I wanted to keep it this way so I made the decision to take one flange off the small cocktail table and mount it on the far aft location of the large table. Now it is supported by two flanges on two pedestals but have a cantilever force when weight is placed on the forward area of the table top. A piece of PVC plumbing pipe, rubber boot, and PVC connecting-flange from Home Depot now make up the third leg that fits snugly in the forward flange. There is no longer a cantilever force on the table. You can see from the two pictures how much floor space is opened because of this modification.

This modification allows us to,place the table in its original location, move it to the bulkhead position, store it in the aft cabin, or lower it in order to turn the table top into the extra bed. Also, it is really easy getting into the port settee storage. It can always be turned back to the original tables by removing and replacing the flanges and patch the screw holes that are on the bottom of the table. The salon now feels like that of the C-385.

A slightly different take on gaining floor space:

When we took delivery of Makani Kai in 2005 our dealer showed us we could simply move the table forward and support it with a single leg. I have done so for eight years but always felt it a little “wobbly”. After reading Rick’s article I have decided to take one of the flanges from the underside of the cocktail table (center the remaining..,..don’t need more than one leg to support it anyway) and mount the flange on the floor where Rick shows his PVC leg. This will double the support for the dinette table by using two legs and leave all of the “factory” options for different table configurations in tact.
