Earlier this month United States Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf appointed Greg Andres to be the Chief of the Criminal Division and Jack Smith to be Chief of Criminal Litigation, a newly created position.

Eastern District Headliners

AUSAs Colleen Kavanagh and Morris Fodeman, together with Jack Smith, the Chief of Criminal Litigation and the recipient of this year's Charles Rose Award, secured a guilty verdict against Ronell Wilson for the murder of two undercover detectives. The jury in this case declared capital punishment appropriate for Mr. Wilson, the first time a New York jury has done so in more than 50 years.

News from January includes the following:

Stan Alpert received a rave review in The New York Times for his new book, "The Birthday Party". The Times describes the book as "harrowing, often hilarious" and "one of the most exhilarating, improbable New York stories ever told."

Paul Bergman began his term as President of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers.

Michele Martinez Campbell announced that her third book, "Cover-Up", goes on sale in bookstores March 13th. Publishers Weekly called the book "stellar", and Kirkus Reviews says it is "fast-paced, suspenseful [and] sexy."

Breon Peace has been elected to partnership at Cleary Gottlieb.

Eric Tischwell of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel was featured in a January 1, 2007
edition of The National Law Journal for his significant community contribution through their pro bono representations. For more details, see the attached article.

Eastern District Dinner

The Eastern District Association's Annual Dinner will take place this week, on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. This year's dinner promises record-breaking attendance, with more than 230 Eastern District Association members planning to attend. As a reminder, the location is the New York Athletic Club, 180 Central Park South (at the corner of 7th Avenue). The cost for alumni is $140, and for current assistants the cost is $90.
