EAST LYME MIDDLE SCHOOL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Dear parents and students,

All students in grades 5-8 participate in physical education class every other day for the entire school year. Our locker rooms provide ample space for students to have their own gym locker. Students in grade 5 and new students need to purchase a school lock from their physical education teacher. Returning students may use the lock purchased in 5th grade. Only school issued locks may be used in the locker room. The cost for a new PE lock is $5.00. All P.E. locks will be placed on lockers at our next class meeting.

Students are required to change for class as part of their daily participation grade. Physical Education attire will be purchased this year from East Lyme Middle School at a cost of $12.00 per set. Shorts are available in maroon or black for $7.00 and t-shirts are available in maroon or black for $5.00. Student’s names should be written on their t-shirt and shorts with a black permanent marker. Students may not modify the shorts or t-shirts.

Running type sneakers with secure laces or velcro are to be worn to physical education class. Backless and high-soled sneakers are unsafe and NOT acceptable. Sweatpants and sweatshirts are recommended for cooler outdoor weather. We also suggest that students keep extra PE clothes in their gym locker and take them home weekly to be cleaned. Students may keep stick or roll on deodorant in their PE locker. Do not bring in aerosol sprays or body sprays. They are flammable and not allowed in school.

Students are expected to actively participate in every class and give their best effort daily. If a student is injured (i.e. stitches, cast) which will prevent them from participating in P.E., please send a note signed and dated by a parent/guardian or physician indicating the length of time necessary to refrain from activity. Students are expected to take part in some aspect of class if they are present in school. Students will receive report card grades based on participation, skill performance, and written assignments.
