Your success is of the utmost importance to me as we begin the new school year. We will study the branch of science called Earth Science. This year we will focus on the following concepts: Astronomy, Oceanography, Geology, Meteorology, Ecology (see www.GeorgiaStandards.org for more information on our standards).

GUIDELINES FOR CLASS:

1. Required Materials: All students are required to bring their notebook, pencil bag/ box (with supplies), to class EACH day.

2. Supplies: You need to have One 3 Ring Binder Notebook and paper. You will also need pens (blue or black ink), pencils, and color pencils.

3. Grading Weights for Middle School (6th Grade): as outlined in the student handbook are:

o  Major: 50%

o  Minor: 25%

o  Daily: 15%

o  Final: 10%

4. Labs: Students are expected to participate in all classroom activities, whether in a group or individually. Labs will be graded and count as a Minor or Daily grade depending on the nature of the lab. Students not following lab procedures will be given an alternate assignment and will be graded accordingly.

5. Homework: Homework is meant to reinforce the day’s lesson by providing additional practice of the content taught in class. Homework is typically checked for completion but may be graded for accuracy on occasion. Most of the homework assigned is to finish their class work or to study for an upcoming quiz/ test.

6. Late Assignments: Assignments should be turned in on time. Projects due will be posted and ample time to complete will be allowed. All projects and assignments not turned in on the specified day (at the beginning of class period) will have 15 points deducted from the earned grade on the first day, with 5 points deducted each additional day on the assignment’s grade. An assignment turned in two days late will receive a deduction of 20 points, and so on. This does not include make up work due to absences, but students are expected to turn in make -up work within the time given, or points will be deducted after the fifth school day.

7. 9 Week Exams: will be given at the end of the end of nine week grading periods. These comprehensive exams will count as a test grade.

8. Tutoring: Every Wednesday - 2:55 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Pickup will be at the front office. Arrangements must be made before Wednesday. Students are required to bring a signed note from a parent giving permission for the student to stay after school for tutoring. Pick up will be at the front office.

9. Grades Posted: Please see the school website for directions to set up your Infinite Campus account. Be sure to select the option available if you would like to receive grades when they are posted.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. E-mail works best, but I can be reached by phone. I am looking forward to an exciting year with you and your child through our exploration of Earth Science!

I have read and understand the guidelines and procedures for Ms. Malone’s class.
