By Shim Schimmel
The Dirt on Dirt
by Paulette Bourgeois with Kathy Vanderlinden, illustrated by Martha
Newbigging
Learn how a grain of African sand can hitch a ride on hot desert air and
travel thousands of miles to settle under your bed. This wide-ranging
book tackles the tilt of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the role mud plays
in the creation of fossils and the mega-problem of landfills tainted by
chemicals. Home project ideas include growing an edible teepee with pole
beans. There are factoids galore: Charles Darwin observed, when he
played classical music to his earthworms, that they ate on high notes
and headed underground on low ones.

The Hunt for Spring
by Susan O'Halloran, illustrated by Dick Smolinski
I know it's a little late for this year, but I would definitely
recommend that you purchase '10 Things I Can Do to Help My World' by
Melanie Walsh. It is short and to the point, and it really opened up
discussion on Earth Day topics... even with kindergarten! My teachers
have begged me to buy more copies of it for next year. After each
suggestion (I will... turn out the lights when I leave the room.), I had
a ton of hands in the air wanting to tell me that they do that every day
As an extension activity, I had drawings of the earth copied (on
recycled paper!). The students took an Earth Day suggestion from the
book, and drew it in the Earth (the older kids wrote it out in
sentences). They cut it out, and we taped them to the wall to make a
collage of Earth Day suggestions.
I've been using The Earth and I by Frank Asch with my kindergartners.
After reading it, we brainstorm how we help the Earth and how it helps
us, then we make a little craft (!) with markers, a coffee filter, and a
spray water bottle. The Earth comes out looking just like the
watercolors in the book.
