UNITS OF STUDY

Unit / Title / Summary Statement
1 / Lab Skills / Students will become familiar with lab safety, lab equipment, measurement, scientific method, and representing data in graphic form.
2 / Matter / Students will know the differences between elements and compounds, understand that all matter has physical properties that can be used for classification, and that matter can experience change.
3 / Force and Motion / Students will identify the relationship between force and motion and will become familiar with the Newton’s Laws.
4 / Energy / Students will gain an understanding of the various forms of energy we use on Earth, and how we can conserve them better in our homes, schools, and communities.
5 / Earth and Space / Students will understand the structural layers of Earth, the rock cycle, and plate tectonics. They will study the organization of our solar system, how gravity governs its motion, and the history and future of space exploration.
6 / Biology/Ecology / Students will gain an understanding of interdependence among organisms and their environment and how the characteristics of those organisms determine their classification.

WHAT ARE MS. WHITWORTH’S CLASS EXPECTATIONS?

1.  Be Prompt (be in class on time).

2.  Be Prepared (have your homework and classroom materials).

3.  Be Polite (be respectful of yourself and others).

4.  Be Productive (share your ideas and experiences with your classmates and express your learning in a meaningful way in the classroom).

5.  BE POSITIVE (Science ROCKS!).

DO WE HAVE ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS CLASS? YES!

1.  Most of the assignments will be completed in class, if extra time is needed it will become homework.

2.  Homework assignments not turned in by the due date will be counted late.

3.  A student’s grade for a late assignment will drop by 15, 25, and then 50 points.

DO WE HAVE TESTS AND QUIZZES IN THIS CLASS? YES!

1.  Students will be given prior notice of test dates.

2.  Students must take make-up tests and quizzes before school.

WHAT IF I’M ABSENT?

1.  Students have one day for each day of the absence to complete their work.

2.  Students should obtain missed assignments when returning to school.

3.  It is the student’s responsibility to schedule make-up tests and quizzes.

WHAT ABOUT ATTENDANCE?

1.  Attendance will be checked daily by seating chart.

2.  Students must be in the classroom when class begins or they will be tardy.

WHAT ABOUT GRADES?

1.  Daily assignments and Quizzes count 50% of their grade.

2.  Major assignments count 50% of their grade.

3.  Labs may be counted as a daily, quiz, or major grade.

4.  Projects will be counted as major grades.

5.  There will be Extra Credit, of some sort, each quarter.

WHAT IF I NEED EXTRA HELP?

I am always happy to meet with students needing help on assignments or clarification on class material. I am available before school. Please don’t ever hesitate to ask for help!!
