Early Years Foundation Phase Maths Lesson 2 – Teacher Notes

Summary

Prior to this lesson, ask the children to bring in a donation of coins (to be used for a coin sort). If this isn’t possible, the school will need to provide the coins (start saving up your loose change!).

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the value of money by sorting and matching coins. The coins will be arranged in a big Pudsey outline for BBC Children in Need. The children will learn about some of the ways that money raised is used to make children’s lives happier by watching a video and through simple discussion.

Learning Outcomes

Children will:

FP AOL – Use number facts and relationships: recite numbers up to 20, forwards and backwards, and from different starting points

FP AOL – Calculate using mental and written methods: solve simple problems in a practical situation that involve simple addition and subtraction

FP AOL - Use number facts within 10: i.e.: doubling and halving, e.g. 4 + 4

FP AOL – Pattern: copy a range of simple patterns and sequences visually and aurally

FP AOL - Developing numerical reasoning: use every day and mathematical language to talk about their own ideas and choices

FP AOL - Shape: recognise and name common 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle and rectangle) and some 3D shapes (cube, cuboid and sphere) within play activities and the environment

Introduction

Let children watch Video 3: Where will your fundraising go? from slide 2 of the Teacher PowerPoint. Talk about your own setting’s fundraising plans: wearing hero-themed fancy dress for a donation, running a bake sale and any other ideas the children come up with. Discuss the Celebration of Champions and explain the purpose of this event.

Activities

Explain what a shape fill is to children by cutting out the Pudsey shape fill (slide 4) and placing the coins inside the lines. Using chalk or tape, create your own large Pudsey Bear ‘shape fill’ on the school yard or in the school hall. Alternatively, use the template (slide 4) for individual children/small groups.

Talk about the Pudsey outline. What shapes is it made up from? How many circles can you count? Are they large or small? Do any of them match? Look for symmetry with more-able children.

Start by letting children estimate how many coins it will take to fill Pudsey’s paw etc.

Children then fill the shape with coins. They could match specific coins to different areas of the shape. Vary the tasks – can they sort by colour, size or different coin denominations?

Support the children to count the number of coins in each different section. Whose estimate was closest? Narrow this activity down to count the number of 10p coins, 5p coins, etc in each section.

Whole Class Plenary

Consolidate understanding of why we are fundraising for BBC Children in Need – to help children who are having a difficult time. Talk about how we can continue to be Champions by dressing up and bringing
in a donation on Friday 13 November, taking part in the Celebrations
of Champions and inviting parents/carers to the bake sale and
other activities.

Children can take home a small Pudsey coin card each (slides 5-7). Parents/carers can assist their child in matching the coins and then have the option of taping them on and sending them in as a donation if they wish.

It’s time for action – start organising your fundraising event with
your class!
