JUNIOR FLYING TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP AWARD 2017- INFORMATION PACKAGE
1. Scholarship Award Goals and Objectives
The aims of the LEFSJunior Flying Training Scholarship Award are to:
- personally involve each scholarship applicant in all stages of the Scholarship application and assessment processes, including contact with club representatives. Any contact, whether by phone, email or in writing, with club representatives, must be personally made by the applicant
- introduce young people to the sport of recreational aviation
- develop personal responsibility
- develop safe flying attitudes
- offer a basis of aviation knowledge for advancement and careers in recreational, military or generalcommercial aviation. It will also act as a stepping stone to the GA Recreational Pilots licence
- assist young people to complete their flying training at minimal cost, and
- encourageyoung people to become active long-term members of the Lone Eagle Flying Schooland the recreational aviation community.
This is a scholarship award program for young people with a genuine interest in aviation - it is not a 'prize'. The scholarship recipient will be required to “earn” the award. Animportant principle is that recipients contribute in-kind to various ongoing club activities, organisational and aviation activities. It aims to assist young people to further their aviation interests.
Note:The overall cost to the Lone Eagle Flying School of the scholarship programme, assessment and social days, media promotion, advertising and promotional flightsis budgeted to cost approximately $ 7,500.
2. Who can apply?
The scholarship is available to male and female applicants who are fourteen years and six months (14 ½) years of age by 01/05/17 and will not have turned twenty-one (21) years of age by 31/12/17. Applicants must be Australian citizens or citizens with permanent residency in Australia. Proof ofpermanent residency will be required.Applicants must be in good physical health and for operational safety requirements, weigh between 50 -100 kilograms.All applicants will be weighed on their first assessment day.
3. The Scholarship Award aims to provide:
- Discounted Trial Instructional Flights (TIF’s) for all applicants during the assessment process
- For the Successful applicant:
- Training to initial Recreational Pilot Certificate over school holidays and / or on weekends (up to a combined total of 50 hours of dual or solo flight training)
- The Lone Eagle Flying Schoolmay,(at its sole discretion), decide to grant a “runner up award”in any year. The value of this award would be determined as required. It would be financed on a $ for $ basis between the student and the flying schoolfor all costs, subscription fees and chargesup to a predetermined amount, but not past the initial Recreational Pilot Certificate.
4. What is covered by the Scholarship?
- Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc. membership for the current year
- RAAus membership fees for twelve months
- Training books package
- Flying training in certified Ausflight Drifter recreational aircraft up until 31st January 2018
5. What's not covered by the Scholarship?
- $75 cost per applicant for the two specially discounted Trial Instructional Flights (TIF’s) for the initial assessment purposes
- $150 cost per applicant for the two specially discounted Trial Instructional Flights (TIF’s) during the Introductory Course for final assessment purposes
- Any flying costs beyond the initial Recreational Pilot Certificate level
- Any flying costs beyond a combined total of 50 hours of dual or solo flight training
- Any flying costs incurred after the 31st January 2018 scholarship award expiry date
- DDSAA and Recreational Aviation Australia memberships and flying fees after l2 months from announcement of the scholarship award recipient
- Any transport costs to or from the training airfield
- Any GST incurred
- Payment of any residual allocated scholarship funds to the successfulscholarship award recipientstudent in lieu of actual training.
6. What's the all-up cost to the Scholarship Award recipient to 'get my pilot certificate?
Most young pilots require about thirty to thirty-five flying hours to achieve an initial Recreational Pilot Certificate. Fora cost of approximately $225(plus own transport costs) the scholarship award recipient can aim for certificate status. The assessment and introductory course flights count towards the students ultimate goal of solo flight and pilot certificate requirements.
7.The Scholarship Award Assessment Panel
The Scholarship Award Assessment Panel shall be comprised of a minimum of threeLone Eagle Flying School members who shall:
- Acknowledge all applications, and advise applicants of the day and date for their initial assessment
- Provide a DDSAA/LEFS Indemnity Form forcompletion, which must be submitted at the commencement of the initial assessment day
- Forward a Lone Eagle Flying School “Spread Your Wings” brochure and business card
- Prepare a confidential shortlist of candidates from the applications, carry out interviews and assist instructorswith assessments as required
- Advise the short-listed applicants of the date and time for the introductory one day course including their two flights
- Prepare a list of graded applicants for final approval by the Lone Eagle Flying School
- Advise short listed applicants of the scholarship outcome and recipient of the scholarship award, and
- Advise the scholarship award recipient of the date and time of the training coursecommencement and include both DDSAA and RA-Aus membership forms, to be completed andreturned with acceptance of the scholarship award terms and conditions.
8. Where to in the future?
- Upgrade to passenger carrying endorsement for family and friends
- Upgrade to cross-country endorsement for flights throughout Australia
- Use prior learning of flight hours and pilot certificate to convert to general or military aviation
- Have better job opportunities and career path for general, military or commercial aviation, and
- Where do you see yourself in five years time?
9. Terms and Conditions
The scholarship award recipient must:
- Live within practical distance of Clifton airfield with transport means to the airfield
- Be in good physical health, weigh between 50-100 kilograms( due to operational safety requirements) and to be able toenter and exit an aircraft without assistance
- Be able to sign a medical declaration that they are fit and healthy, to a standard equivalent to that required to obtain a motor vehicle driver’s licence
- Be willing and able to spend time on study and various ongoing club activities
- Be able to communicate and understand in written and spoken form the English language
- Complete their scholarship training and obtain their Pilot Certificate by 31st January 2018.
10Scholarship Cancellation
The scholarship award for the2017 year, may, at any time and without notice, be suspended, cancelled, not awarded or not issued, at the sole discretion of the Lone Eagle Flying Schooland the Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Assn. Inc, the issuing authority.

The Process
- An applicant’s assessment process, evaluation and review commences once the applicant has made the first contact with the club. Applicants must be involved in all stages of the Scholarship application and assessment process. Any contact, whether by phone, email or in writing, with club representatives, must be personally made.All documentation, must be written, dated and signed by the applicantpersonally
- Applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for flying, attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions throughout the application and assessment period. This is one of the most foremost requirements of the selection process
- Applicants must demonstrate teamwork and comply with all the scholarship requirements.
Stage 1:
a.Forward a completed Application Form to Lone Eagle Flying School by the scholarship closing date of 31st March 2017
b.Attach a clear frontal photograph of yourself taken in the last twelve months (selfie will suffice)
c.An initial assessment process will be applied by the Lone Eagle Flying School prior to the first assessment day.
Stage 2
All applicants who pass the initial assessment process will be forwarded an acknowledgement package by email for printing out or via Australia Post containing:
a.Information regarding the days and dates for applicants initial assessment flights
b.A DDSAA / LEFS Indemnity Form for completion, signing and dating
c.A Lone Eagle Flying School survey to complete on how applicants found out about the scholarship (if requested)
d.A Lone Eagle flying School “Spread Your Wings” brochure and business card.
Stage 3:
It is planned that all selected applicants will attend an initial assessment day to be held during April, May or June 2017, during which they will undergo two Trial Instructional Flights (discounted to $75) with a qualified LEFS Instructor to assess their flying aptitude and be informally assessed by the Scholarship Assessment Panel with regards to your teamwork, interest and commitment to aviation and interest inthe club.At registration, on the initial assessment day, students will be required to:
a.Show proof of age (Birth certificate, passport, school ID, or other acceptable documentation)
b.Show proof of residency status if required (visa, passport, or other acceptable documentation)
c.Submit a correctly signed, dated and completed DDSAA / LEFS Indemnity form
d.Submit a completed club surveyon how applicants found out about the scholarship (if requested)
e.Pay $ 75 towards the cost of the two trial assessment flights.
What Happens Next ?
Stage 4:
- Applicants will then be short listed to a maximum of 10 (all applicants will be advised)
- All short listed applicants will be forwarded a packageby email for printing out or via Australia Postcontaining:
- general reading material on the Drifter in the WB 582 Drifter overview document
- pilot operating study notes for a WB 582 Drifter light aircraft
- study material on general aircraft check lists (cockpit checks)
- study material on abridged radio calls and definitions to be used on the final assessment day
- a letter from the club advising students that they have progressed to the final round of the assessment process
Stage 5:
- All short listed applicants shall attend a final assessment day comprising of ground lectures and two extended flights, (discounted to $150). All flights count towards your Recreational Pilot Certificate
- The Scholarship Assessment Panel shall conduct final assessment and aptitude evaluation during the day
- All students attending on the final assessment day will be formally interviewed by the assessment panel
- At the time of registration on the final assessment day, applicants will have to submit:
- Show proof of age (Birth certificate, passport, school ID, or other acceptable documentation)
- Show proof of residency status if required (visa, passport, or other acceptable documentation)
- Submit a correctly signed, dated and completed DDSAA / LEFS Indemnity form
- Submit the letters of referral from the two non-family members *originally indicated on your application form, eg. your local teacher, adult friend, etc. These refereesmust attest and confirm your reliability, interest and commitment to aviation and must sign and date the reference.Our Association reserves the right to contact these referees at any time.
- Submit a completed,dated and signed word processed document of not less than five hundred (500) words, using a standard 12 point font, which outlines the students interest in recreational aviation and tells the assessment panel why the student should be awarded this scholarship and the document must also address the Key Selection Criteria (below), in written point form:
The Scholarship Award Key Selection Criteria
- Interest and commitment to aviation – how important and why do you want to learn to fly and become a pilot
- Level of co-operation and support from family members
- Level of interest in continuing as a Lone Eagle Flying School member and what benefit they will bring to aviation generally and to the Lone Eagle Flying School
- Current or previous involvement in organized activities or youth groups
- Future aviation plans, including short and long term goals.
Stage 6:
- A list of graded applicants will be prepared for final approval by the DDSAA Committee
- All short listed applicants will be advised of the scholarship award recipient
- The scholarship award recipient will be advised when training can commence.
