Early India Assignments Due 2/8

Learning Goal: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the development of Early India through India’s geography, India’s features of civilization, and important people.

Hitting To Understand:

1st Base (Single): I know where India is located, I know India has civilization features, I know India has important people, and I know India has some sort of geography

2nd Base (Double): I know and can explain where India is located, I can explain some of their civilization features, important people, climate, mountains, and river systems.

3rd Base (Triple): I know and can explain where India is located, I can explain most of their civilization features, important people, climate, mountains, and river systems.

Homerun: I know, can explain, and teach others about India’s location, all their civilization features, important people, climate, mountains, and river systems.

Features of Civilization Assignment:

Students are to create a thinking map, picture notes, or write a paragraph describing at LEAST 4 of the 7 features of civilization found in Early India. Then students are to choose one of their features of civilization that they created and compare it to Early India’s features in a paragraph (MUST BE A PARAGRAPH). In total students should have at least 4 thinking maps, picture notes, or paragraphs and on paragraph comparing a feature of their civilization to Early India’s. Paragraphs must include thesis statement and conclusion sentence. Picture notes must have at least three pictures with no more than 15 words describing the pictures drawn. Students must include the following for each feature chosen:

Job Specialization: (Help on pgs 386-389, 414,420-425)

  • Name of the 3-5 jobs
  • Duties of the jobs

Religion: (Help on pgs 390-405)

  • Describe the different religions found.
  • Explain different rituals (Four Goals, Three Paths of Moksha, Eightfold Path)
  • Explain whether religions were monotheistic or polytheistic.

Cities: (Help on pgs 414, Early India Cities article)

  • What were the name of some of the cities?
  • What were most resources in the cities found?
  • Explain characteristics of the cities (types of buildings and irrigation systems)

Government: (Help on pg 414-421)

  • Is the government a monarchy, oligarchy, or democracy?
  • How did the government deal with daily duties? (Dealing with big populations and taxes)

Art/Architecture: (Help on pgs 380,416-419,422-425)

  • Describe an important building and technological structures built in the civilization
  • Describe at least 2 forms of culture (music, dance, math, sports, science, etc.)

Social Class: (Help on pgs 387-389, Caste system article)

  • The different people in the civilizations social class and who rules the social classes
  • The structure of the social class (Explain caste system)

Writing: (Help on pgs 384-386, 422)

  • Describe the type of writing system
  • Explain what the writing was used for

VIP (Very Important People) Assignment:

Students are to create a thinking map, paragraph or use picture notes to describe the people (VIPs) listed below in Early India. Paragraphs must include thesis statement and conclusion sentence. Picture notes must have at least three pictures with no more than 15 words describing the pictures drawn. Thinking map, Paragraph, or Picture notes must describe the following:

  • What did the person do?
  • Why was the person important to their society?
  • Explain the accomplishments made by their society under the person’s leadership.

VIPs: Ashoka, Chandragupta, Chandra Gupta I, Kautilya, and Siddhartha

Early India Math: Students are to complete Early India math worksheet provided by Mr. Bryant. Students must show their work in how they found the answer. Worksheets will be only class copies but students will be able to access them online also to work on them at home.

Early India Job Assignment: Students are to fill in a beginning resume to apply for the following jobs in early India: farmer, artisan, merchant, and carpenter. Be sure that the information provided is accurate and complete. Students will only receive one copy but can print extra copies from Mr. Bryant’s website.
