Ealing Youth Council present

Ealing Youth Inspectors

Introduction

Ealing Youth Inspectors is a new initiative that gives young people the opportunity to inspect and review services for young people, make recommendations and give feedback that will allow for improvements to be made. Services undergoing a youth inspection can ensure that they are developing in a way that benefits and reflects the needs of young people, and show that that they are listening to the opinions of young people themselves.

We are hoping to sign up a wide range of services for Youth Inspection, which will ensure Youth Inspectors get a variety of experiences during their engagement with the project.

Services that could be suitable for inspection include:

  • Health services
  • Police, Youth services
  • Local Government services
  • Schools
  • Leisure and Recreation facilities
  • Entertainment venues
  • Social services
  • Library and information centres
  • Courts
  • Private/high street businesses.

All Ealing Youth Inspectors are recruited and trained fully. Once equipped with the knowledge and resources to carry out Youth Inspections, the group members will work through the different stages of the inspection process:

  • Research and briefing
  • Assessment of service/organisation
  • Recording findings
  • Report writing
  • Feedback to organisations undergoing inspection
  • 6 month review visit

What will young people gain from being a Youth Inspector?

The Ealing Youth Inspectors project will equip young people with practical and analytical skills, as well as increasing confidence, communication and teamwork skills. At times Youth Inspectors will have to record findings which will give them an opportunity to develop written grammar and presentation skills. The project itself will allow young people to develop a greater awareness of the community, and organisations working with and for young people, as well as the needs of different members and groups within the community.

All Youth Inspectors will receive training, support and accreditation for their commitment to the project.

Fast Facts Sheet

Here is some information you might find useful to help you decide if you want to be a Youth Inspector.

Do you want to learn new skills and gain more confidence?

Do you want to meet new people?

Do you think young people’s services can be improved?

If you want to be part of making changes to young people’s services then the Youth Inspectors programme may be just the thing for you.

What is the Youth Inspectors programme?

Youth Inspectors is a programme running across England to bring young people together and support them to influence young people’s services.

It is recruiting young people with a range of life experiences to work as small teams and give their views on how specific services are working in the area. By services we mean anything you use; from transport, health clinics, community policing and libraries to career advice, youth centres and more.

We don’t expect you to learn about and comment on all of these services of course!

You would work with adult support workers in your area, meet new young people with different life experiences, do some learning in a fun way and then go out and assess services you and your friends may have used or wanted to use but have not been able to.

Some more questions answered…

What’s in it for me?

  • Learning about different types of services available for young people and making a difference to how these services operate by feeding back to the decision makers
  • Learning new skills
  • Gaining confidence in meeting new people and sharing your views
  • Meeting new people from different backgrounds and with different experiences from across Ealing
  • Having lots of fun
  • Earning an accreditation (qualification) for your commitment and new skill developments

What would I have to do?

You must be able to commit to:

  • Taking part in an induction training session where you will learn the skills you need to do the work
  • Working in small teams and respecting other young people’s views even if they are not the same as yours
  • Representing the views of other children and young people by going out to local services and getting their views heard.
