Music scholarships start here!!!!!!!!!!!
New Beginnings!!!
Derrick Thomas, Principal
Band Objectives
- To recruit and retain hardworking, well behaved, committed, and dedicated students. Band is serious and we need serious students!
- To teach music skills in line with the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum and the National Standards for Arts Education.
- To incorporate core subjects/concepts within the framework of the band class to include the following: science, math, reading, writing, and social studies.
- To provide performance opportunities beyond the school day.
- To prepare students for advance music and academic study.
- To involve parents and community in these experiences.
- To receive Superior Ratings at Large Groups Performance Evaluation!!!
- To have students participate in District Honor Band/All State Band
- Every student strives to do their part. BE ABLE TO PLAY YOUR MUSIC!!! Do not depend on someone else to “cover” your part(s) for you.
Expected Behavior-Students are not “placed” in band. This year long class requires parental consent as well as students with good attitudes who are serious about music education. If you are not serious, band may not be the class for you.
- No student in ISS or Oss for any reason
- Do your very best in all classes.
- Attend school every day.
- Be on your best behavior at all times.
- Put up all equipment you take out.
- Keep the band room clean.
- Respect yourself, one another, and the school
- Respect those who are on the podium by being quiet and attentive. The podium is a symbol of authority!
- Have materials for class.
- Practice your instrument!
B-Be Better everyday
A-Always assume responsibility for your actions
N-Never be disrespectful of others or their property
D-Do what is right, always!!!

Performances
- Performances are mandatory and serve as 25% of your grade.
- Parents, family, and friends are strongly encouraged to attend performances on and off campus.
- Always wear appropriate performance attire(TBA)
- Be on time for performances. If you arrive at the exact time a performance starts, you will miss it. We always start on time.
- There is no talking during performances. Respect other groups while they are performing.
- Students will be dismissed once all equipment has been put up, performance area is clean, and band room is in order. Please do not leave early.
Afterschool Rehearsals
- Mandatory for those special groups(TBA)
- Director will work with coaches and athletes.
- Be prepared to split rehearsal time with coaches.
- Arrange transportation in advance.
- Have parents pick you up behind the school at the rear band room exit.
Financial Responsibilities
The band will accept cash/money orders “only” for all band expenses. The only exception is for fundraisers where we will accept checks. All money turned into the band must be clearly labeled as such:
- Placed in an envelope
- Students grade
- Purpose of money
- The school will not accept a personal check over $50.00. Students name and phone number must be on all checks. No check with address written in left corner or missing a check number will be accepted.
Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE)
LGPE is a mandatory state-wide assessment of musical performance and site-reading ability sanctioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association. Selected students will represent the band during this event. As with all performances, this event serves as a 25% grade. Rehearsals are required. Students removed from this honor band for failure to meet the rehearsal requirements are subject to the 25% penalty.
------
Instrument Storage Room
Students caught taking items that don’t belong to them or vandalizing instruments will be referred to the office for further disciplinary actions. Students may be removed from program.
Practice Record
All students are required to practice at home and have parents sign practice record weekly. The record counts as 15% of your grade and is due every Monday Morning.
Non Selling of Band supplies
The director will NOT sell items listed under the materials/supplies section. Parents are asked to visit a local music store to secure the necessary items for band class.
Instrument Care
- Cases are required to have name tags and locks(personal instruments)
2. Drum sticks and mouthpieces should be engraved with student’s name. Director can engrave items.
3. Keep the serial number of privately owned instruments in a safe place at home.
4. Instruments should be cleaned after use. Brass should empty water valves and wipe instrument clean. Woodwinds should swab out their instruments and wipe off the keys. Percussion should put away all materials and take tension off all timpani.
5. Keep all mouthpieces clean with soap and water. Flutes should wipe off head joint.
6. Please put a lock on all personal instruments.
Instrument purchase
Band is a financial investment which requires the purchase of certain types of instruments, materials, supplies, and a band uniform for performances. Parents are asked to purchase/rent to own the smaller instruments which the school does not have on inventory. Those instruments include the following: clarinets, flutes, alto saxophones, trumpets, trombones,
Parents will need to purchase mouthpieces for the following instruments which are on school inventory: Baritone, tuba, French horn, tenor sax, baritone sax, and bass clarinet
Oboe and bassoon players need to purchase 3 medium soft reeds. The school owns a few of those instruments. Parents are strongly encouraged to invest in an oboe or bassoon once the student shows a very serious nature for wanting to continue studies in high school and beyond on these instruments.
No student will be turned away from band because of financial reasons. If this situation occurs, the student will be placed on what ever instruments are available on the school inventory. This instrument may not be the students first or second choice instrument.
Special Note referencing chosen instrument
Students are expected to remain on their chosen instrument for the entire duration of middle school band. Upon entering 9th grade, considering a certain level of proficiency has been met, students may pick up a minor instrument.
Instruments and school busses
There is absolutely no room on school busses for larger instruments to include the following: Tuba, baritone, French horn, baritone sax, snare drum and bell kits.
If students are car riders, taking these instruments home will not pose a problem. Students riding the bus will not be allowed to transport the listed instruments on the school bus. Students will need to check with drivers for any exceptions to this policy.

Instrument Testing
1. Each student will be tested in class on wind and percussion instruments. This process will take about four weeks (until the end of August).
2. At the conclusion of testing, a letter will be sent home to parents in regards to the recommended instrument, materials/supplies, and assessments for rentals if applicable to student. Strong consideration will be given to the instrument each student labels as their 1st, 2nd, or 3rdchoice.
3. After instrument testing (End of August), instrument, materials, and/or supplies will be due about 3 weeks after letters regarding recommended instrument are sent home (Around mid-September).
4. Students who already have experience playing a wind or percussion instrument, as the result of participation in a band class or private lessons, will remain on that instrument.
5. Please do not purchase instruments, materials, and/or supplies until you receive a letter from the director indicating the results of testing.
-Once assigned an instrument, students will be required to submit a weekly practice record which has to be signed by parent. This practice record will count as a weekly 15% homework grade.
