Fall Festival Royalty

E. P. Ward Elementary recently had their annual Fall Festival on Friday, October 9, 2015. This year we brought the royalty back to our school and it was extremely successful. Thank you very much to everyone who helped support our students this year. The Dutch and Duchess were Ryan Drake and Shana Weaver. The Prince and Princess were Braxton Fields and Abigail DeAtley. The King and Queenwere Dylan DeAtley and Sadie Tranbarger. Congratulations students on all your hard work.

Special Thanks

A very special thanks to all our parents, grandparents, guardians, neighbors and volunteers of Ward Elementary children. Our Fall Festival could not have been a success this year without your help. Whether you donated something, bought a ticket, came to the festival, chili supper or auction, your support is greatly appreciated. After all…it is all about the kids!!!

PTC/Data Night

November 10, 2015, Ward Elementary will host a data night from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Come meet with your classroom teacher to talk about the various data (MAP, Benchmark, KPREP and Classroom data) on your child. We will then have a brief PTC meeting at 6:00 p.m. where we will recognize our Proficient and Distinguished students from last year’s KPREP test. Please come out and support your child.

Veteran’s Program

Come honor our local veterans on November 17, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. with Ward Elementary. Our students will be performing a variety of patriotic songs and recognizing the veterans present. Please come and share in this wonderful program with your child.

Also, we will be creating a Veteran’s wall in the hallway the whole month of November. Please send in any pictures of veterans in your family. Write the name of the veteran, the child they are associated with, their branch of service and any other information you know about them on a piece of paper or on the back of the picture. A copy will be made and the original returned to you. Thank you for your help in honoring these special men and women who have served and protected our freedom.

The Veterans Museum

By: Koleton Thompson and Karlee Butcher

On September 24, 2015, the 4th 5th and 6th grade classes went on a field trip to the Morehead Veteran’s Museum. What we learned was that a lot of people lost their lives for our freedom. The museum had a memorial wall to remember the lives that were lost and when they served.

They had a room with uniforms from all the branches of service, they even had a captain uniform. They had the pictures of what the badges stood for. They had a room with swords, pictures of the war, old gun shells, and the food that they ate in the Vietnam War. They also had old bullets that were on a strap.

This was an amazing field trip (especially for someone like me who really likes guns/war stuff). I absolutely loved it and after talking to several of the other students they really enjoyed the trip as well.

Bus Driver receives Honor

A Kentucky Colonel Certificate was presented to Jimmy Hall, abus driver for Fleming County Schools, on Friday evening at the Ward Elementary Fall Festival. Mr. Hall alerted a student who was crossing the road to a passing motorist earlier in the spring. His attentiveness to his duties prevented a serious accident from occurring. Mike Denham is shown presenting the certificateto Mr. Hall. Thank you Mr. Hall for caring our kids!

Kentucky State Police Visit

By: Jadyn Gevedon

On October 27th of 2015 a Kentucky State Police trooper came and taught everyone in grades 3 through 5 about drug prevention. He asked all of us some drugs that we knew of and then he did a presentation for us. The trooper asked for a volunteer and he chose Crystal Legorreta. He told her to put on these goggles that would make you see just like a person would see when they were on drugs. He asked her to put her left foot on the yellow line and her right foot in front of it, she could barely even stand up it was so funny to watch, but scary realizing that is what drugs and alcohol will do to you. When she finally got her balance he said walk on the yellow line and each step you take make the heel of your right foot touch the tip of your left foot. She said okay and started to walk, she couldn’t stay on the yellow line and it took her about 2 minutes to walk it.

When she got finished Mrs. Adams (5th grade teacher) did it and it was hard for her to walk the line too, she could barely even make it. After all the demonstrations were finished

He told us about how he could smell drugs and alcohol if someone has it. The trooper told us some stories and then sadly it was time for us to go. That was a very interesting experience; he was great teaching us about drugs and his job. Thank you Mrs. Dales for arranging this program for us.

Feed the Minds

By Karlee Butcher

The 4th and 5th grade classes went to the Feed the Minds program in Lexington at Rupp Arena. The program was for 4th and 5th grade students across the state of Kentucky to promote literature. The program featured a librarian, a story teller and the first lady of Kentucky; it also had an author from Cynthiana, Kentucky.

They had a bunch of games for the kids and teachers to participate in. The author read some of her favorite book. The book was about a young girl about the age 16 becomes a country singer.

The story teller told us a story that she loved. The story was about a little boy that does the opposite of what people told him to do and at the end of the story he gets a big surprise. All of us had a great time.

A Special Thanks

The PTC would like to express a huge thank you to the parents that attended the October PTC meeting. It was wonderful to hear your ideas. We are currently in the process of researching and following up on the ideas expressed at the meeting. Please continue to attend and be involved with the PTC. You are a valuable part of our school and your input is greatly appreciated. As always, if you would like to volunteer to help out at school, our doors are always open.

5th Grade On-Demand Fridays

5th Grade has been working hard to answer some On-Demand writing prompts for Mrs. Adams. She has declared Friday as “On-Demand Friday” to help get the students to be better writers. We are using the SPAT method (Situation, Purpose, Audience and Task) to tackle our On-Demands. Below you will see first-hand some of the prompts we are using and some student answers. GO FIFTH GRADE!!!

*Situation: Mrs. Adams is fresh out of ideas for Fall Festival. She needs help deciding what she should do in her classroom on Fall Festival night to make money.

Argument/opinion

September 9, 2015

Dear Mrs. Adams,

I have the most wonderful idea for Fall Festival. My idea is dart the balloon. This game works like this. You take a card board wall and tie balloons to the wall. You get darts and you are ready to play.

This game will be fun. Kids love throwing darts. Kids absolutely love prizes. Kids love balloons. The prizes will work like this. There will be a number behind each balloon and if you hit the balloon that’s how many prizes you get. There will be numbers on all balloons and if you hit one balloon and it has a one on it that is how many prizes you get.

This game will make you exercise. This game will exercise your arm. This game will make you laugh and laughing is good for you. This game will exercise your fingers because when you go to pick the dart up it exercises your fingers.

This game will be fun because I have played this type of game before. This game will make you laugh and laugh. It will be fun to throw darts at balloons.

In conclusion this game will be fun. This game will make you exercise. This game is fun because it will make you laugh. I hope you will take my suggestion for your game at Fall Festival.

Sincerely,

Madison Ginn

*Situation: The state of Kentucky is having a teacher of the year contest for the teacher who has inspired you the most.

*Task: Write a letter to the judges persuading them why your teacher should be teacher of the year.

Argument/Opinion

October 16, 2015

Dear Kentucky Contest Judges,

I believe Mrs. Amanda Logan should win teacher of the year because she is an amazing role model, she is really funny and fun, and she is an amazing reader.

Mrs. Amanda Logan is an amazing role model to children. She tells them to never give up when they stop trying. I remember when someone in school stopped trying to work and got in a lot of trouble but she told them to stop, breathe and work so he would not get in trouble. She also makes them smile when their sad. One time she helped me become happier when something happened to my family that night before so I would smile the whole day. Lastly, she tells you that you only get stuff when you earn it. I earned a lot of stuff in Mrs. Logan’s classroom because I worked hard for what I earned like candy and prizes.

Mrs. Amanda Logan is also really fun and funny. When you’re having a bad day she cheers you right up with games and activities. One day our whole classroom was down in the dumps because we were all tired or didn’t have time to do our homework the night before so she let us all play games like doggy doggy and heads up seven up. When she makes a mistake she makes a joke about it. One time she accidentally spelled a word wrong and she said “I guess I need to go back to 2nd grade!” we all laughed. Lastly when you work hard and do what you’re supposed to do she gives you a reward like candy or sometimes even a surprise!

Lastly Mrs. Amanda Logan is an amazing reader. She reads with funny voices like cartoon characters to make us all laugh even if the book is not funny. She makes it dramatic and really cool so we can feel like we are actually inside of the book. Lastly she lets other kids read so everyone gets a part of the action. I read a lot when I was in her classroom it was really fun.

In conclusion Mrs. Amanda Logan should be teacher of the year in Kentucky because she is an amazing role model to children, she is really fun and funny, and she is an amazing reader. I hope you will choose Mrs. Amanda Logan for teacher of the year.

Sincerely,

Jadyn Gevedon
