APPLICATION

Seabuckthorn can be used for making more than 100 products. Processed products include oil, soft/hard/powered drinks, jams, sweets, vitamin C tablets, food colors, cosmetics, and medicines.

USE IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

At present, many factories are producing Seabuckthorn food, beverages and other products such as jam, jelly, juices and syrup. Along with traditional foods, some new ones such as condensed juice, mixed juice, Seabuckthorn carrot jam, candied fruit, cheese, butter, biscuits, tea and health protection drinks are also being produced.

USE IN THE MEDICINAL INDUSTRY

About ten varieties of Seabuckthorn drugs have been developed and are available in the form of liquids, powders, plaster, pastes, pills, liniments and aerosols etc. These drugs are used for treating burns, gastric ulcers, chilblains, scales, oral mucosities, rectal mucosities, cervical erosion, radiation damage, skin ulcers caused by malnutrition and other damage relating to the skin. The most important pharmacological function of Seabuckthorn oil is in diminishing inflammation, disinfecting bacteria, relieving pain and promoting regeneration of tissue.

USE IN THE COSMETIC INDUSTRY

Many kinds of Seabuckthorn cosmetics have been developed. It is believed that Seabuckthorn beauty cream has positive therapeutic effects on melanosis, skin wrinkles, keratoderma, keratosis, senile plaque, xeroderma, facial acne, recurrent dermatitis, chemical corrosion and inchthyosis, as well as freckles. Other Seabuckthorn extracts can improve metabolism and retard skin maturation.

USE OF LEAVES AND RESIDUES

The leaves of Seabuckthorn contain many nutrients and bioactive substances. Leaves and fruit residue used as supplementary food can promote growth of animals and poultry. There are no toxic or carcinogenic side effects.

Methods of extraction

For seed oil, there are two methods of extraction, Carbon dioxide (Co2) Supercritical Flow Extract and solvent. No chemical solvent and synthetic material are used during processing by Co2 extract. Thus no chemical residual or preservative antioxidant exists in the oil and the oil is a pure, natural and high-grade product. While by using solvent in extraction, there has residual left but we can guarantee that the residual is less than 10ppm.

For fruit oil, solvent extract is used in production. Please note the price of Seabuckthorn seed oil are different based on the method of extraction. The price of seed oil using Co2 extract is higher than that using solvent.

Seabuckthorn concentrated juice powder

The SBT powder is made by low temperature spray drying the concentrated SBT juice. We use low temperature drying technique because the Vc in SBT is very easy to be damaged when heated.

Therefore, we use Vc as the controlling parameter to control the quality of spray drying. We will keep the Vc at least 500mg/100g vs that in the fresh juice in the range of 850mg/100g. In fact, except the Vc, all other nutrition in the SBT juice will remain mostly the same as in its juice form.

The powder can be used for many different applications. For example, it can be dissolved again into water to produce beverage. It can be blended with other ingredients to form dietary supplement products in form of tablet or capsule etc.

Seabuckthorn Oils

Selection of the Seabuckthorn oils are much depending on its application. For instance, if the Seabuckthorn oil is made from its seed, the color would be light yellow like vegetable or peanut oil. On the other hand, if it is made from pulp and peel, the color would be red instead. Thus, if color is main concern for the end product, seed oil should be selected.
