Responsibilities

Group Commanderswill ensure each cadet at the academy meets the high standards of citizenship, academics, and respect, while presenting a positive image by acting as an ambassador of theAFJROTC program. Group commanders will lead by example and set a positive tone for not only their top staff, but also for the institution as anentirety. They will adhere to and re-enforce the guidelines set forth by the Commandant, SASI, and the Administration.

Duties of the Group Commander:

  • Be an example for the underclassmen and the entire institution
  • Establish a strong team of motivated individuals who can be relied upon to complete activities that are undertaken
  • Enforce the Chain of Command
  • Lead assembly with authority and confidence
  • Lead Wednesday morning staff meetings; Hold members responsible for their positions
  • Formulate unit goals and make sure they are completed by 01 April
  • Report progress/plans to the Director, Commandant, or specific visitors as required
  • Represents the corps in public appearances
  • Work in correlation with the AFJROTC instructors
  • Report directly to the SASI, Major Dorman

Assembly Procedures:

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays
  • Or if summoned by the Director, Commandant, or SASI
  • Hold Command Chief responsible for flight alignment and flight behavior
  • Once Deputy Commander has given the all clear for flight assembly
  • March to microphone with precision
  • Square corners to face the Academy
  • Command, “Academy Tench Hunt.”
  • Command, “Present, Arms” Wait for all guideons to be risen
  • Start The Pledge of Allegiance on Cadet Uniform days (Wednesday) or wait for the playing of The National Anthem on AFJROTC Blue’s days (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
  • Once completed, command “Order, Arms.” Wait for allguideons to be risen.
  • Command, “Parade Hest.” Count down from ten slowly for moment of silence
  • Command, “Academy Tench Hut, Please Remain at the Position of Attention for the entry of the, ______.” (Usually Director)
  • Execute Left Hace and render a hand salute to the individual presenting first (Usually Director)
  • Walk off the center stage and wait for all announcements, if any, to be given
  • Once all announcements have been given, march back to the microphone and square corners to face the academy.
  • The Group Commander should give his/or her necessary announcements.
  • Wait for all Squadron Commanders and Command Chief to get into position.
  • Once completed, command, “Academy Tench Hut, Squadron Commanders Take Control of Your Squadron and Dismiss Them to Homeroom.”
  • Wait for the all Squadron Commanders (4) to render a hand salute, then the group commander renders a hand salute dismissing the formation.
  • Group Commander and Deputy Commander complete a simultaneous about face.
  • Deputy Commander should report all non-essential announcements
  • Group Commander reports the following announcements
  • Pizza Sales, Top Staff Meetings, Changes in AFJROTC Classes
  • Squadron Commanders, First Sergeants, and Command Chief are not to exit the gymnasium until the Group Commander dismisses them.
  • On AFJROTC Blue’s Days and ABU days (opt in 2014-15 school year), the Group Commander must use the saber provided by the SASI.

Wednesday Meetings

  • Every Wednesday morning = Cadet Top Staff Meeting
  • Weekly Agenda:
  • Commence: 0700
  • Executive support will set up the week’s slide show
  • Begin going over every slides with the entire staff
  • Answer any questions or give pointers/voice concerns for each staff member’s slide
  • Once presentation is complete (Should take 12-15 minutes), the Deputy Commander will present the following week’s Operation’s Order.
  • Once completed (Usually 5 minutes), spend the rest of time talking about upcoming events or projects.
  • Promptly at 0730, Command “Room Tench Hut”
  • Face Major Dorman, or whomever the instructor may be, and command “Cadet Top Staff ready for dismissal.”
  • After rendering a salute, face your staff and dismiss them.

First Year Orientation:

  • 2014-15 Commander planned and organized the Summer Leadership School
  • Highly Suggested to be an annual event
  • Begin planning event in early July before the upcoming school year
  • Should include all new cadets (9-12) and all incoming freshman from Pre-Academy
  • 2014 Leadership School had 8 cadets assisting
  • Usually Top Staff members
  • Break up into groups to discuss certain subjects
  • Uniforms
  • Wall Bracing/Reporting Procedures/Class Opening/Closing Procedures
  • Stationary Drill
  • Clubs/Activities
  • Assembly/Flight Numbers
  • School Tour- Cadet led
  • Handbook- Rules/Guidelines
  • 2014 team used PowerPoint has the main point of resource.
  • The order and time of each group and how the groups are designated are up to the Commander
  • The 2014 event ran from 0900-1600
  • Due to the large attendance the team broke into two groups.
  • The schedule ran:
  • 0800: Cadet Assistants Report
  • 0900-0930: Introductions
  • 1000-1045: Discussion Period 1
  • 1100-1145: Discussion Period 2
  • 1200-1240: Lunch (Provided by AFJROTC; pizza)
  • 1245-1330: Discussion Period 3 (Handbook- all cadets in pit)
  • 1340-1420: Discussion Period 4
  • 1430-1600: Drill/School Tour/ Uniform Fittings
  • Should be record of attendance because all attendees/teachers receive the Summer Leadership School Ribbon.
  • This event should be fun yet informative; the key is to guide and make the incoming cadets feel prepared and welcomed and not feel scared to start at APA
