PAUSES HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE RECORDING TO ANTICIPATE AUDIENCE LAUGHTER

YOU CAN MODIFY THE (YOU) LINES TO FIT YOUR PERSONALITY. REWRITE AND BE CREATIVE!

SOUND ADVICE: You can perform this routine by playing the mp3 on a quality "boom box" portable stereo mp3 player in small areas, or over a professional sound system in large areas such as an auditorium or outside. Do not play on a small inexpensive player because the sound will distort when you try to play it loudly. The mp3 should be played with plenty of volume. Kids will be laughing hard and will miss the routine if it is too quiet, and adults may keep laughter to a minimum for fear of missing parts of the program. The volume of the mp3 should be set about the same as if you were speaking over a microphone to be heard by the group, or louder.

You may want to actively pause the mp3 during your performance in case you get a large audience laugh (we hope you do) after one of the jokes.

It is best to have the mp3 played over a public address system and have the sound man preset the volume level to be compatible with your microphone level.

INTRO: SMOKE DETECTOR EXPLANATION

You:So tell an adult in your family to make sure that all the smoke alarms in your house work and are replaced every ten years. Remember, a working smoke alarm can wake your family and save a life. If there’s smoke, you’ll hear this sound…(TRIGGER SMOKE ALARM – BEEP BEEP LOUDER)

OPENING MUSIC

DUSTY IS IN A CASE. OPEN THE CASE AND BEGIN PUTTING HIM ON AS THE MUSIC IS PLAYING.

D:Whoa...what's that! Wow...hello!...help! Ahhh…ahh…ahh…choo!!!

You: Whaat?! Are you ok? (BRING OUT DUSTY NOW) I didn’t even know you were here!

D: Oh... I was just taking a nap. A loud noise woke me up.

You: I was telling the kids how to protect their homes and loved ones with smoke alarms. When they hear that noise, they have to know what to do.

D: Hey! I can help with that BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT'S IMPORTANT ABOUT FIRE SAFETY!!! (BRASS FANFARE) Does everyone have those things in their house?

You: I hope so; put up your hand, if you have smoke alarms in your house. Wow...it looks like most of them do have smoke alarms.

D: Get outta here.

You: That’s right, Dusty. Folks should put smoke alarms on every level of their house - even the basement.

D:Put ‘em where you live and where you sleep. Then push the button to make sure they beep. Testing the smoke alarms and their batteries, if they have them, is very important.

You:That's right. They should ask a grown-up to test all the smoke alarms in their house every month by pushing this button to make them sound. (DEMONSTRATE)

D:Yeaah. If the smoke alarms have bad batteries, replace them immeeediately!

You:And remember, whether the batteries test good or bad, replace all the batteries in all your smoke alarms twice a year.

D: Twice a year?

You: Twice a year.

D:It's reeaal easy to remember. Change the batteries when you set your clocks ahead in the Spring for Daylight Saving Time; and in the Fall, when you turn the clocks back to return to Standard Time. Ha, ha, ha.

You: Yep. Remember change the batteries when you “Spring ahead “and when you “Fall back”. If you do, they'll always sound off like this if there's a fire. (DEMONSTRATE BY TRIGGERING THE ALARM)

D: Wow. That was loud…really loud. You could hear that everywhere – if you’re reading or playing or watching TV – even if you’re sleeping, you’d know that there was smoke in the house. And where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire. So, sound an alarm. Then get out, stay out and call out the Fire department as fast as you can.

You:You're right, Dusty. Everyone should go home and make an EXIT Plan with their family.

D: A what?

You: An exit plan.

D: What's that?

You: So that everyone will know how to escape if there’s a fire. Making an Escape Plan and holding a Fire Drill at home can save your life...

D: Well that's a good thing.

You: ...and the lives of everyone you love.

D: Wow!

You: OK Dusty, tell the kids what to do if they hear an alarm. (DEMONSTRATE BY TRIGGERING THE ALARM)

MUSIC BEGINS (BEEPING SETS TEMPO)

D:You hear a beep,

It wakes you from your sleep,

And warns you of emergency,

You want to leap!

There’s smoke up there,

It’s crowding out the air,

Your heart begins to beat real fast,

You panic as you breath your last…!!! (YOU GRAB DUSTY)

You: STOP! STOP! Don’t panic, Dusty.

D:Oh, oh, yeah. I kinda got carried away there.

You:You usually do.

D:Yeah, well...the one thing you DON’T want to do is ‘panic’. There’s a few things you should do if a fire happens.

You:What’s that?

D:Well, when you hear the beep, sound an alarm. Then get out, stay out and call out the Fire department from outside your house as fast as you can.

You: Good idea, call from outside the house.

D: Also, if smoke is so heavy that you can’t see, and it’s hard to breath, get down on your hands and knees like a dog and start crawling out under the smoke.

You:Like a dog? Why?

D:Well, cause smoke rises. There’s less hot smoke and more good air close to the ground. Smoke from a fire can make you choke..(COUGHS AND SPUTTERS).

You:Are you OK?

D:(COUGH) Oh yeah…thanks.

You:Good….so you drop to the floor and crawl to safety.

D:That’s right. You have to get out of the house as fast as you can, and STAY out! You gotta have fresh air or you could be in big trouble! Call for help after you are outside your house. I know because I KNOW WHAT'S IMPORTANT ABOUT FIRE SAFETY!!! (BRASS FANFARE)

You:O..K.. So, let’s review the steps here. The first thing you do is..(SONG INTERRUPTS)

MUSIC STARTS

D:It’s like this!!

You gotta get down low,

You gotta crawl out of there,

You gotta stay outside,

You gotta meet somewhere…

You: Whoa, STOP! Why is a meeting place so important?

D:Well, a fire can make everything confusing; so, you need to decide on a meeting place where everybody can meet outside the house. It might be a mailbox, or a tree, or a lamp post, or a neighbor’s house…just as long as EVERYBODY knows where it is!

You: Right, Dusty. That way you know if all of your family got out safely.

D: Yep. If somebody’s not at your meeting place, when the firefighters arrive, you can tell the firefighters who might still be in the house. Remember. Get everyone out of the house. Never go back into a burning house! You could get hurt real bad!!

You: That’s very good advice, Dusty. You know, just the other day…(YOU ARE INTERRUPTED AGAIN BY THE MUSIC)

MUSIC BEGINS

D: You gotta get down low,

You gotta crawl out of there,

You gotta stay outside,

You gotta meet somewhere…

Now everybody, repeat after me! (YOU LEAD THE CROWD IN REPEATING EACH LINE)

You gotta get down low, (You gotta get down low)

You gotta crawl out of there, (You gotta crawl out of there)

You gotta stay outside, (You gotta stay outside)

You gotta meet somewhere… (You gotta meet somewhere)

You gotta ah…ahh…ahhhh

You:(YOU HOLD FINGER UNDER DUSTY’S NOSE) Easy...Easssy!.

D: Thank you. That was a close one.

You: Are you okay now?

D: Oh yeah..thanks…oh no…ahh….ahhh….ahhhh…

You:(YOU HOLD FINGER TO DUSTY’S NOSE) Here…let me help.

D: There. Wow…thanks. (MOVE HAND TO PREPARE TO ACTIVATE SMOKE IN DRAGON)

You: Okay…good, because…

D: ACHOOO!!!!!! (BIG SMOKE BLOWS OUT OF DUSTY IF EQUIPPED WITH SMOKE OPTION).

You: Bless you!

D:Thank you. I think I can go because I know what's important about Fire Safety andNOW...THEY DO TOO!!! (BRASS FANFARE)

Ah….chooo! (BLOW SMOKE AGAIN WITH SNEEZE IF DESIRED)
