Beans

Connection

-During my last work with Jaliyah we made great strides in determining which operation to use in word problems. She also, showcased her ability to subtract, however I want her to get away from subtracting individual ones with bigger numbers and use her ability to group and her number sense to perform subtraction.

-This is the last session before my post assessment with her. I think this will be a great place to wrap up all that we did during our time together, and a last activity before her post assessment. I know she has already showcased much growth.

-Within this lesson I will use bags of beans to help her with her grouping of subtraction. This is similar to the candy math and the visuals she has worked well with in the past.

Teaching Point

-I want Jaliyah to be able to begin using mental math with numbers less then ten, and using number sense and her ability to group to subtract larger numbers.

-The following standards are being addressed.

2.2.3 / View Resource(s)
Subtract two whole numbers less than 100 without regrouping.
2.2.6 / View Resource(s)
Use mental arithmetic to add or subtract 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 with numbers less than 100.

Active Engagement

Before

-I will ask Jaliyah if she remembers what went over last week and for her to inform me what she learned.

-I will showcase Jaliyah the beans we will be using and talk to her about grouping to subtract. I will take some individual beans and show to her long it would take to count individual beans when subtracting.

-I will then ask her questions such as how much are 2 groups of 10? 6 groups of 10? This will showcase her understanding of grouping and will give her confidence in subtracting larger numbers.

-Have a specific string of problems ready that can build off of Jaliyah’s prior knowledge and development.

During

-Together, Jaliyah and I will work on subtraction problems using number lines and the beans. The beans are already packaged in specific groups so that she can visually see and perform subtracting larger groups of numbers and breaking larger numbers down so that it is easier to perform.

-Continue to question Jalyiah’s thinking and have her verbally express her thought process, allowing her to better understand mathematical concepts.

-Gradually release responsibility within the problems to allow her to be able to perform the problems on her own.

After

-Inform Jaliyah how proud of her I have been and that next week will be our last session together. I will also have copies of her previous work so that she can physically see the growth and development she personally had made.

Link to Ongoing Work

-This is the last lesson with Jaliyah that will wrap up my work with her. For next week I will have her post assessment to determine her growth and development mathematically, and to showcase how I have personally grown as a teacher.

Reflection

-I could not be any more proud of the work that Jaliyah has done and the growth that she has made. Today’s lesson was challenging and difficult to grasp yet she showcased great work and support of her thinking.

-Through my time with Jaliyah I have seen much improvement in her number sense, grouping, addition, subtraction, and problem solving. My assessment for her next week will hopefully reflect these improvements.

-In terms of myself Jaliyah has also taught me. She has showcased to me the importance of clarity and specific word usage in my directions. She has also showed me the importance of understanding and knowing who the individual is will allow you as a teacher to better instruct them,
