10th Grade/Confirmation Experience

In order to be eligible for Confirmation, students must complete the required classes including those from prior years. If you have any questions or concerns about past credits, contact Debbi Kasper Derech Torah, Coordinator immediately.

As part of the Confirmation experience, students are eligible for a wonderful trip to Jewish New York. The trip will take place October 12-16, 2017. Students who participate in the New York trip must sign an agreement that they will complete 10th grade classes and participate in Confirmation.

Class Requirements

During 10th grade, they are required to complete:

•Literacy review class and pass the one exam

•Torah With the Rabbi —Confirmation class

•Confirmation Prep, Shabbaton (retreat) and

rehearsals

Confirmation students are also expected to complete:

•Eight Worship/Avodah services

•One Shabbat Worship Greeter credit

•Four Tikkun Olam/Social Action credits

•Two Kehilah/community credits

Confirmation Award Opportunities

Evan Oppenheim Borinstein/Lucille Borinstein Cohen Award:Character and Leadership
This award was established in 1952 and is awarded to the male and female student in the confirmation class who shows for exemplary character in Jewish and communal affairs. These students will be awarded an engraved watch.

Kroot Family Award: Academic Excellence
This award established in 1983 and is awarded to the male and female student in the confirmation class who shows academic excellence. These students will be awarded an engraved Havdalah set.

NFTY Institute Award: Overall Contribution to the Class
This award is from the Etta Platt & Nathan Levin funds are scholarships awarded to the students to be used towards attendance at a Jewish youth event.

Sarah W Goodman Award Confirmation Fund: Creativity
This award was established in 1976 and is awarded annually to a student in the confirmation class to be used towards a camp scholarship. This award recognizes the creative artistic accomplishments of the award winner.

Chai Club Award: Large Number of Chai Points Earned
This award recognizes the students who earn a large number of Chai Club points. This has been done by taking additional education credits, attending extra worship, attending Tikkun Olam events/program or by attending additional Kehilah events in the community.

AvdoahWorship Credit Opportunities

Students are expected to complete eightworship credits per year.

Worship credit is awarded for attending:

  • An adult worship experience at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation: Shabbat and/or Holidays
  • An adult worship experience at other Jewish congregations
  • Worship during an Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation sponsored youth group or NFTY event (maximum two credits per event)
  • Three different style services at IHC: a traditional Shabbat service, a Nefesh service, and a Classical service; write a paper comparing and contrasting these services
  • One service at IHC and one service each at B'nai Torah, Etz Chaim, Shareey Tefilla, and Congregation Beth El Zedech; write a comparative paper outlining the differences and/or similarities to your experience at IHC

Shabbat Worship Greeter Credit Opportunity

Students are expected to complete one Shabbat Worship Greeter credit per year.

•Students and parents will sign up for one time greeting opportunity and will meet with the Rabbi prior to the start of the Shabbat worship service.

Tikkun Olam/Social Action Credit Opportunities

Students are expected to complete four Tikkun Olam credits per year.

Tikkun Olam credit is awarded for:

  • Volunteering at IHC or any other organization in the community

-Work in the learning center preparing materials for the beginning of the school year…Date & Time TBA.

  • Participation during a hosting time at IHC for the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Contact Lori Anderson for more information.
  • Students will earn one credit per full (not partial) hour they work

-Credit will be given on the honor system; you will simply need to complete and

return the credit form available in the Education Office

Kehilah/Community Credit Opportunities

Students are expected to complete two Kehilah/community credits per year.

One Kehilah/community credit is awarded for attending:

  • Any Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation sponsored retreat (ie, Rosh Hashanah)
  • NFTY sub-regional or regional event
  • Any local Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation sponsored youth group events, congregational programs, community religious events or community program.
  • Any Jewish overnight camp
