Diversity Edition

Object: To work as a small group to create a board game that encompasses the elements of the “Game of Life” with content related information and questions from your “Diversity of Life” Science Book (chapters 1-6).

Duration/Time Frame: 4 school days

12/19, 12/20, 1/2, 1/3

Directions: Choose several classmates that you would like to work with. No more than four to a group.

Day 1: Brainstorm a game board design and sketch a rough draft. Determine a name for your game.

How will you advance in the game? Dice, spinner, numbered cards?

Will players need play money? What is the prize for winning? How many players?

Create at least twenty situations or questions related to our Science curriculum that must be used during the game (10 advance, 10 go back):

Ex.Stepped on a spiny echinoderm, go back 1 space

Broke your femur, pay $100 to Emergency Room

Met Carolus Linnaeus, move ahead 2 spaces

Discovered new type of aquatic protist, win $500

Day 2:Assign jobs to group members

1. Neatly writing playing cards from 20 situations and writing the rules

2. Drawing game board on construction paper

3. Creating play money, spinner, number cards, or game pieces

4. Designing the box for the game

Playing Cards Requirements: At least 10 cards that will move a player forward, at least 10 cards that will move a player backward. Situations or questions must be from our “Diversity of Life” book. Please include topics from Chapters 1-6. Rules of the game must be agreed upon by the group and written neatly (or typed) with titles including: Object, # of Players, and How to Play.

Game Board Requirements: Must include at least 50 spaces on the game board. Certain spaces must force a player to choose a playing card. Design must reflect a “natural scene” on Earth (forest, jungle, ocean).

Game Pieces Requirements: Player game pieces can be brought in from home (other board games) or designed using classroom materials. Play money will be copied (one-sided), a relevant design to you game must be drawn on the back. Create one sheet of play money, I will duplicate it. A spinner can be created using paper, pencil, and paperclip. If you would like to use dice in your game, I have dice that can be borrowed.

Game Box: The game box should reflect the overall theme of the game board. Only the top of the box set must be decorated. The name of the game must be written on the top and sides. Creator names should be written only on the top. Use as much color as possible. Directions will be pasted to the inside top of the box, game board and pieces must fit in the bottom portion of the box.

Day 3: Determine what needs to be completed and finish creating the game. Test “play” the game to make sure everything works.

Day 4:Present your “Game of Life: Diversity Edition” to the class and play other groups’ games.
