FERRARI SHOWS MARS WHAT RED REALLY IS!

No car brand is as closely associated with a colour as Ferrari is with red and the Italian supercar manufacturer is celebrating its scarlet obsessions with a unique exhibition at the Galleria Ferrari, including how Ferrari is showing its version of red to the red planet, Mars.

Attached to the outside of the Mars Express space probe is an ampoule of Ferrari’s Rosso Corsa paint, the red used on its Formula One cars, so as the highly success satellite launched by European Space Agency circles the red planet, a sample of earth’s most famous red is looking down on Mars. As part of the exhibition at the Galleria Ferrari, replica of the Mars Express with the world’s best travelled paint sample kit is on display.

The ‘Non solo Rosse’ exhibition celebrates Ferrari’s use of red from the very first Ferrari, the 1947 125S through to the latest Ferrari, the Ferrari 458 Italia. While red is the Ferrari colour, the exhibition reveals that there is no single Ferrari red, rather there is range of reds, including historic reds, such as RossoCherry, Cina, Cordoba, Dino and Rubino, as well as new metallic version of the Formula One Ferrari red that debuted in 2007. Today, red comes in Rosso Scuderia, Rosso Corsa, Rosso Mugello, Rosso F1 and Rosso Monza depending on which Ferrari supercar is selected.

But, as the exhibition declares in its title, Non Solo Rosso, or its not Just Red, Ferrari has a whole world of colours and these are also celebrated in the exhibition. There is a stunning collection of cars, from the unique FXX in Blu Tour de France with Bianco Evo details, to the 1959 400 Superamerica in Argento Luna (a one-off built for Gianni Agnelli), and the brand-new Ferrari 458 Italia in a three-layer Giallo Modena livery.

Also on display are test pieces by the Chinese artist Lu Hao, who recently created a one-off version of the 599 GTB Fiorano China Limited Edition, using a special paint to mimic the typical cracked glaze of the peerless Song Dynasty Ge Kiln porcelains. The colours tests that led to the creation of Ferrari’s Oro paint used on a Pininfarina one-off car inspired by the Ferrari 330 LMB, which starred in Toby Dammit, one of three episodes in the Federico Fellini’s film Spirits of the Dead, and the Enzo Naso painting depicting the car used in the film are also featured. Visitors are also taken through the various interior leather and contrasting stitching colours which clients choose as part of the personalisation of their Ferraris, all the way to the newly introduced Portfolio programme which really does ensure that each car is unique.

But regardless of the beauty of a colour, it must be applied to the body work correctly, so the exhibition also has an in-depth investigation into the painting processes used at Maranello. This includes a model of the Paint Technologies Pavilion, the most advanced facility of its kind anywhere in Europe, and a video illustrating all of the various stages involved in the paint process. Visitors also get to see an example of a piece of paintwork in various stages ranging from cataphoresis to final finishing layer.

“Non solo Rosse” from October 31st 2009 to April 30th 2010; exhibition included in price of entrance ticket. The Galleria Ferrari, which is Ferrari’s home town of Maranello, is open every day (except December 25th and January 1st) from 9:30 to 18:00.
