Dumfries Running Club - Monthly Bulletin December 2014
Club Kit
If you need any kit, contact Sue remember to qualify for club events e.g. Grand Prix/Cross Country etc, you need to wear club colours either vest/tee-shirt/crop top (if you are lady at least!).
Committee Update
There have been a couple of changes on the DRC committee with Adam stepping down after several years of service. Danny Q has now joined the committee. The other change is that Sue J has taken on the role of ladies captain replacing Maggie who will continue to sit on the committee and to carry out the many tasks at training and social events etc.
Thanks to Adam and Maggie and welcome aboard Danny and good luck for Sue taking on another role within the club!!
Dates for the diary
Sunday 25thJan (11am) – SVHC Open Masters Road Relay
I know a lot of you will be familiar with this event having taken part over the years. I reckon we can field some strong teams particularly on the ladies front and the men’s vet 50 team. For those not familiar with this event, it consists of ladies teams with three runners aged 35 or above, and men’s teams made up of 4 runners with a vet 35 and vet 50 category. Each runner does on lap of the Loch at Strathclyde Park start/finish near the boat house. The trio of Sian, Lisa and Jo won this a few years ago, whilst Kev, Graeme, Jim and I have finished 5th. Although it attracts some of the best masters from around Scotland, it’s not just for the elite or competitive and everyone should feel comfortable about entering. It’s nice to be in a team environment with club members that you are normally competing against.
If you wish to be included in the team(s) or to act as reserve then please email me ASAP at I will deal with the entry and Sue and I will organise the teams. The more the merrier
Saturday 31st Jan – National Masters Cross Country Championship
Venue: KILMARNOCK
This is the last time I can say I’m too young for this one It’s a good event for the masters to test themselves against each other. There are various age groups with full details on the Scottish Athletics website. You will need to be an SA member to compete.
RACE / DECLARATIONS CLOSE / RACESTARTS / DISTANCE

Saturday 28th Feb – DRC Annual Awards Dinner Dance
It’s that time again, although this year we have moved from a Friday to a Saturday night so it will bit less stress-full for us all trying to rush home, get the glad rags on and get out, not mention fit a wee run in Once again this will be held at the Crichton Golf Club and full details will be posted/circulated in due course.
Whilst some feel the awards ceremony gets in the way of drinking/dancing time, it is the primary reason for the night, so please take time to think back through 2014 and complete the nomination form attached below. This is your chance to give your fellow members of receiving recognition for their efforts and achievements throughout the year. It’s not all about times and results, but as much about effort and improvement etc. so don’t be shy. Remember in order to receive an award runners have to first be nominated!!
For all previous trophy winners and to those due anaward this year, i.e. club champion and runner up etc. can you please make arrangements to get the trophy (s) back to Sandy no later than the 18th January. This includes any of us who have previously received tankards/goblets that will need engraved this year. (Jacob, no nonsense this year please)
Other Dates
I have attached a fixture list for 2015 with the GP kicking off at Dentdale on the 14th March. There is a new Trail GP with 3 out of 4 races counting towards the series. So hopefully we will see many of you at these events throughout the year and also at our own events either running or helping.
Notable Performances/Highlights from2015
I will leave this to you this month as I don’t want to sway any nominations for the much coveted DRC awards!! Have a trawl through the memory banks and our website which has all race reports from the year, and get the form completed and returned to myself or Sue no later than the 11th January. Email or print, complete and hand to us.
Xmas Handicap
Thanks to Les for putting this event on again this year. Also thanks to all who helped with time-keeping and marshalling etc. Well done to Steph who finished first
Highland Fling Relay
At the recent Christmas Handicap, a draw was made to decide who would represent DRC at the Highland Fling Relay in 2015. Sorry to those who missed out, our team is:
Sue Jeffrey
Kerry Walker
Mo Khan
Frank Skachill
Good luck to you when the time comes
London Marathon Places
Again this year we had more applicants than places. The 3 places for 2015 go to Gemma L, Ranjit T and Chris W. Good luck in your preparations and on the day.
Standards Scheme
For those runners striving to achieve a certain standard, be it bronze, silver, gold or even gold+, you have until the end of December to achieve the required times. Les has sent a reminder for everyone of how to claim. Please check your times against the standards as some runners have missed awards in previous years by not claiming them.
Response from the DRC Club Questionnaire
There was a great response to the questionnaire with 99 members completing this. A summary of the findings will be circulated in due course. Meanwhile keep an eye on the website and FB for details of upcoming sessions.
