7th February 2018

Dear Parent/ Carer

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Your child’s expedition is due to take place on Saturday 3rd March 2018 in the Helston/Lizard area. A letter will follow shortly with the detailing the event. Before the expedition takes place, we need to make sure everything is prepared and ready, this includes the following;

EXPEDITION KIT DEADLINE

During our last meeting we asked participants to check at home, with friends and family, to see if they have a 2/3-man tent or camping stove they can use for their expedition. We only have a limited number of tents and stoves to hire out to participants for their expeditions. We ask a £20 per person deposit for using our equipment. Upon return of the equipment, £15 will be refunded. If the need arises, we will look to borrow from other centres in the area. Either way, participants need to confirm their kit arrangements with Mrs Greig before tutor time on Monday 19th February at the very latest.

Once we have worked out what equipment is needed, we will have it ready for collection at the expedition kit inspection - please can participants bring the £20 deposit to this session.

FULL EXPEDITION KIT INSPECTION

We will be carrying out a full kit check on Monday 26th February in the North Site Hall. Participants will need to pack everything on the kit list, as if it is packed for their expedition; this includes boots, tents and stoves.They do not need to pack any food for this inspection. Rucksacks can be left in our DofE garage from 8.30am on the morning of the inspection.They will be able collect it again after School. Due to the large number of participants taking part, we ask that all participants are patient with their leaders during this session and while they wait for their inspection. If you need a copy of the kit list, please email me and I will send one to you.

They will continue to work on their final expedition route cards as a team. As part of the DofE 20 conditions, any items missing from participants rucksacks could result in your child not being allowed to take part on the expedition.

RECORD SHEETS AND EDOFE

Participants are expected to keep their activity record sheets up to date with their assessors and their leaders. When they have finished an activity, they are expected to write a report on how well the activity has gone, this report will need to be either uploaded online to your child’s profile or handed in to Mrs Greig. Participants must bring their record sheets to every DofE session(Mondays 3.15pm). Failure to keep the records up to date will result in your child not being allowed to take part in the expedition. Sadly, my leaders have recently informed me that some of our Participants are failing to do this.Please can I remind you that DofE is run by volunteers who are giving up their time to run this award for your child, and that it is your child’s responsibility to complete this task.We would appreciate your support in this matter. Thank you to all those who are managing to keep these things up to date. We are asking that all activity record sheets are placed in an envelope labelled with your child’s full name and given to Mrs Greig in C2 by Monday 19th February. We will return these sheets to particpants on Monday 26th February during kit inspection, ready for their expedition.
