Duke AHEAD Fellow

The Duke AHEAD Fellow level recognizes Duke Health educators who are earlier in their careers as health professions educators but who are already demonstrating the potential for major and on-going contributions to health professions education within Duke Health or the profession. The purpose of the Fellows level is to:

  • Recognize commitment and service to Duke AHEAD and excellence in education within Duke Health
  • Recognize early and mid-career educators who have a leadership role within an educational program, and/or who have developed courses, curricula and innovative educational materials and methods
  • Identify future education leaders within Duke Health
  • Promote inter-professional activities, collaboration, and innovation
  • Identify potential mentors for Academy members
  • Recognize those who are working toward furthering the goals of Duke AHEAD

Nominations: Fellows of Duke AHEAD will be nominated by peers within the Duke Health community.

Review of the candidates will be based on achievements and contributions of a health professions educator, focusing on one or two areas of excellence that reflect the Educator Competencies established by Duke AHEAD.

While there is not a maximum or minimum number selected each year, the number of candidates selected for the Fellows designation will be limited.

Eligibility for Distinguished Member

  • Less than 10 years of experience as a health professions educator
  • Duke Health faculty members at all ranks
  • Duke Health Professional staff involved in educational activities above and beyond assigned job responsibilities
  • Duke AHEAD member for 2 or more years

Prior educational experiences and contributions will be considered as well as activities within the Duke Health community. Educational contributions and experiences are defined as including activities at Duke, at other institutions, and at regional, national, and international levels.

Application Process

  1. Two nominations are required to be considered for this category.
  2. One of the nominators must be a member of Duke AHEAD.
  3. There must be a primary nomination that includes the detailed information list below (#2)
  4. Supporting nomination letters, at least one but not more than 2, are required that discusses the areas of excellence and achievements of the nominee.
  1. The primary nomination form should address the following:
  1. State nominees name, current position/rank, department and contact information (email, campus box, telephone, etc.
  1. Number of years of experience as a health professions educator.
  1. Identification and description of achievements and contributions within of 1 or 2 areas of excellence based on the Duke AHEAD competencies that demonstrate this person should be given serious consideration being recognized as a Duke AHEAD Fellow.
  1. Achievements within Duke Health or profession related to health professions education.
  1. Current and potential contributions to Duke AHEAD.
  1. Copy of the nominee’s current CV should be attached to the primary recommendation letter.
  1. Supporting nomination letters, at least one but not more than 2, must but be submitted by the deadline and address the nominee’s areas of excellence and achievement.

Duke AHEAD will acknowledge receipt of both your initial and documentation applications when they are complete.

Recognition of Award of Distinguished and Fellow Member Levels

A letter of the designation of Duke AHEAD Fellow will be sent to the applicant, his/her supervisor, department chair or department head, as well as the appropriate dean.

A letter from Duke AHEAD will also be provided for the use in promotion and tenure decisions and it will explain the criteria and process behind the Fellows appointment.

Fellows will be recognized at the annual Duke AHEAD event.

Renewal at Fellows Level: Designation of Duke AHEAD Fellow will continue for 3 years. A fellow may be nominated once more for this level, but then needs to be considered for the distinguished level when 10 years of experience has been achieved.
