CLASS NEWS!

Class 1
/ We have begun our new topic of Traditional Tales this week starting with “Little Red Riding Hood”. Reading 5 versions of the books, we have compared storylines, characters and illustrations. These discussions have amazed us as the children have given detail and justified their responses with reasons.
Everybody has written their own version of the story with a beginning, middle and end. They wrote a letter to Red Riding Hood from the wolf saying sorry for his actions!
In Maths we have worked on the 100 square, locating specific numbers. The children enjoyed learning how to use the 100 string beads to help work out numbers!
Class 2
/ Class 2 had a shock at the start of the week. They discovered that toys had arrived in the school playground with address labels on them. We talked about where they might have come from and the children decided that the toys should be returned to their rightful owners. We have begun looking at a new story for our English lessons which begins with toys being left out in the garden over night. The children have made a Top Trumps style card based on the characteristics of one of the toys from the story. They have also written an account of what the toys might have experienced during their night in the garden.
In maths, the year 1s have returned to place value to learn about the value of each digit in numbers upto and beyond 100. The year 2s have been learning how to tell the time to every quarter of an hour.
Class 3
/ The bug hotel constructions are all fantastic! Thank you toeveryone who has helped make each one really special. During next week, the hotels will be put in place around the school grounds where we hope all the little creatures of Aston have a great time over thecoming months.
In English, the children have researched interesting facts about large sea creatures and were surprised to find that a Blue Whale is the biggest creature to have ever lived on Earth. If anyone finds any evidence to dispute that fact, please let us know so that we can add to the growing amount of new information found so far.
Everyone enjoyed the first swimming lesson of the year and all worked hard to demonstrate their very best techniques. To complete an active week, the class have much enjoyed the skipping workshop today and will no doubt be wanting to demonstrate their skills to you over the weekend.
Class 4
/ This week, we have been looking at translation and reflection in maths. We have learned about the different ways of moving shapes and if they change as a result. In English, we have been working on The Three Little Pigs. We read a newspaper article about Little Red Riding Hood being prosecuted for breaking and entering and destruction of property. We are writing our own article about the Three Little Pigs being arrested for boiling Mr Wolf alive. We have considered the opinions of other characters in Far Far Away who either support the wolf or pigs. Through this unit, we have specifically looked at using colons and semi-colons as well as shifts in formality.
Although years 4 and 5 were disappointed that Jeff Longmoor had to change the date for our 'Play in a Day', they are looking forward to it on Monday of next week. 2 parents/carers per child are more than welcome to attend.
Our topic for this term is The Rainforest. Please look at our class page for the Medium Term Plan which shows what we will be covering this term.

R O A D S A F E T Y

Please be mindful of other drivers, cars and residents when driving down Aston Lane and parking your vehicles. Please refrain from doing 3 point turns outside the school. Please keep the yellow zig-zags CLEAR at all times –

Zig-Zags must be kept clear at all times. It is an offence to park/drop off/wait on them. While it may be well known that you can't park on yellow zig-zag lines, you also can't wait or even stop momentarily to drop off or pick up passengers, according to the UK Highway Code. This is because parking on yellow zig-zags outside schools puts children at risk, as outside school gates there are lots of children running around, buggy congestion and pre-school children.
