Current Global Issues, the Geographic Inquiry Process and Geographic thinking Scrapbook

Due Date: Start of period Monday February 12th.

Required resources:

  • Pages 8 and 9 of course text on validating information from a source.
  • Page 15 on detecting bias & sniffing out bias.
  • Academic OneFile research database (you will need your Toronto Public Library card)
  • Global Issues in context Research Database (access through the school’s library page)

Object of this assignment:

Upon completion of this assignment you will:

Expand your knowledge of current global issues

Understand and be able to apply the geographic inquiry process

Understand and be able to apply the concepts geographic thinking.

Instructions

Select only one of the topics below:

  • Causes of natural resource disparities
  • Population distribution and quality of life
  • Protection of the natural environment
  • Globalization
  • Human rights

1.Create a title page using the template provided on the course web page. The title on the title page must be in the form of question which will provide focus for your investigation.

2.Locate three articles; eachwhich presents content about a specific event related to thetopic you selected above:

  • Each article must be about a global issue, or an example of a global issue( as determined in the working definition)
  • The articles do not have to be about the same specific event.
  • One article must have a level of highest confidence of reliability, one article must have a lower level of confidence of reliability, and one article must have the lowest level of confidence of reliability.

3.For each article include the following analysis:

a)Summarizethe key points (i.e. Summary)

b)Analyze the significance of thegeographical location and/ornatural environment. (I.E. why is the event happening in this location?)

c)Identify and explainapattern or trend(e.g. similar causes resulting in a similar event in other locations).

d)Analyze the level of biasand reliability. Include specific evidence in your analysis.(i.e. of bias and level of reliability)

  • The original article must be presented in the project.
  • The article cannot be excessively long.
  • One article must be from a print source (i.e. not from the Internet).
  • PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. For on line sourced articles an original (i.e. not photocopied) printout is required.
  • All articles must be properly referenced in a correctly formattedAPAworks cited using Knight Cite.
  • The project must be typed with no handwritten material included.
  • Insert a correctly formatted table of contents (view the YouTube video on how to do this by Dr. Eugene O'Loughlin).

  • Include page numbers and your name in the header of each page (do not include a page number on your title page
