Lesson Plan 1

Naming plants seen in our locality

Drop and drag activity – pages 2 and 3 of flipchart

‘Guess the flower’ – pages 4 and 5 of flipchart

Objectives

To be able to name the commonly seen flowering plants: sunflower, daisy, rose, bluebell, poppy and daffodil. To test their visual memory and naming skills of these plants by playing the ‘Guess the flower’ game that follows.

Desirable Outcomes/National Curriculum

KS1 Science: ‘Living Things in their Environment’ “…find out about the different kinds of plants of plants…”

‘Knowledge and Understanding of the World’ “Children should have experience of …living things”

Resources

If possible, examples of some or all of the flowers shown on these pages and/or other commonly seen flowering plants could be passed around the class.

Introduction

Ask the children about the flowers they commonly see in their locality. They could think about the flowing plants in their gardens, a neighbour’s garden, the local park etc. Can they name and describe some of these flowers?

Group Work

Whole class - Use the first and second page of the flipchart. Name the flowers. Read each word together. Choose some of the children to match the word to the appropriate flower by clicking on the chosen word, dragging and dropping into position. Move onto the ‘Guess the flower’ pages. Either read out, or ask a child/the children to read each clue in turn – Can you guess which flower it is? Move the rectangle to reveal the picture of the flower. Using the real examples of flowering plants you have in the classroom, choose some children (either in pairs or individually) to think of three clues they could give to the rest of the class to describe the flower – can the children guess the flower?

Individual work

Draw a picture of his/her favourite flower. Depending on ability, the children can either describe this flower to the rest of the class, show his/her picture and explain why it is a favourite flower or write down this information and take turns in reading in to a group of children, or the whole class. An adult could also act as scribe for less able/younger children.

Plenary

Ask the children to name some of the flowers we have talked about. Are there any flowers in this group that they had not seen/heard of before?

Homework

Ask the children to look in gardens, parks etc. with their family to see if they can spot any of the flowers we have talked about today. Can they draw a picture of or write about, where they have seen a particular flowering plant and whether it was on its own or if there were lots of these plants? Were the plants close together? In clusters? In a field? etc. Describe what they see.
