How old do I have to be to start taking classes at SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy?

You have to be at least 15 years, 9 months and 1 day old. This is a Registry of Motor Vehicles requirement.

Do I need my permit to start driver education classes?

You do not need a permit to attend classroom instructions. HOWEVER, you do need your permit for driving lessons. In order to schedule driving lessons, SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy needs to have a copy of your permit.

What are the driver education requirements?

30 hours of classroom instruction (15 classroom lessons)

6 hours of observation of other student drivers

12 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction

2 hours of parental/guardian classroom instruction

40 hours of driving with parents/guardians

Can I Pre-register?

Pre-registration is required! You can pre-register for classroom instruction by coming to our office, or go on line at to download the application.

Can I just show up?

You can just show up, but there is no guarantee that there will be a spot available for class. The students who have pre-registered have priority.

What should I bring to class?

Please always bring your blue appointment card with you. DO NOT LOSE IT, this is your record card and it is required for your driver’s education certificate.

SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy will provide a copy of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Drivers Manual, a pen, highlighter, student driving card, parent driving log and class folder for the material.

Class starts promptly, please do not be late; any student arriving ten (10) or more minutes late will be allowed to reschedule the class at no additional cost.

For how many hours a day can I take classes?

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles sets the following guidelines:

  • Driver Education Students may NOT take more than six (6) hours of classroom lessons daily.
  • Driver Education Students may not observe or drive behind the wheel more than 2 hours daily.
  • Driver education Students must take a minimum of twenty-four hours between driving school lessons.

Due to these restrictions, if you are enrolled in the intensive course, you may not drive or observe during the week long accelerated classroom course.

How do I schedule my driving lessons?

Once you have finished all of your classroom hours you should call the school 978-345-6200 to arrange behind the wheel and observation time.

How soon can I get driving?

SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy has lessons seven days a week. Availability depends on your schedule. Remember that the sooner you call the office the sooner your lessons are scheduled. Usually it takes about two weeks from completion of the classroom instruction before appointments are scheduled.

Can I drive without a permit?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!You must have your permit with you during every driving lesson, no exceptions!

Is my permit required?

You must have your original driving permit with you at the time of your lesson. The driving instructor will ask for the permit prior to you being allowed to begin the behind the wheel or observation portion of the Drivers Education program. If you fail to have your permit with you it is considered a no show appointment!

A no show appointment fee of fifty dollars ($50.00) is assessed and no additional appointments will be scheduled until the fee is paid, should this happen please contact the office immediately..

If I have to cancel a lesson, what is the requirement?

SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy has a 24 hour cancellation policy, which means if you need to cancel a behind the wheel or observation lesson notice must be given to the office a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours in advance. Failure to properly cancel a behind the wheel or observation lesson will result in a fifty dollar ($50.00) assessment. No additional behind the wheel driving or observation time will be scheduled until the fee is paid.

Where is the pick-up and drop- off for driving lessons?

When scheduling a lesson please arrange the location of pick-up and drop off. Remember when scheduling behind the wheel and observation time you may be picked-up or dropped off at school, home or work but plan accordingly. Allow time for unexpected delays.

How much is a private lesson?

A private driving lesson is fifty-five dollars ($55.00) per hour.

Do I need to have driven with my parents before starting driving lessons with the instructor?

It is highly recommended!

Prior to starting behind the wheel hours with the instructor you should attempt to have approximately fifteen (15) to twenty (20) hours of behind the wheel driving experience. Remember to record all your driving hours on the parent driving log.

How do I find obtain my Drivers Education Certificate?

Once you have completed all the course requirements, you should hand in your appointment card at the Safe Roads Driving Academy Office. After your course appointment card requirements are verified, the SafeRoadsDrivingAcademy staff will notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles. If a problem arises the office staff will contact you. Approximately ten (10) days after your information has been processed you can verify your Drivers Education certificate on line at:

How Can I schedule a road test? .

There are two paths a person can take to schedule a Class D road test to become licensed in Massachusetts:

To Take Your Road Test On Your Own:

  1. You may book a road test as an individual through the RMV online service, through the RMV automated telephone service, or by calling the RMVPhoneCenter. These tests cost $20 and are offered Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

• Call the RMV’s automated service phone number 866-MASSRMV (866-627-7768) to schedule your test. This number and additional information regarding road tests is in your Commonwealth of Massachusetts Driver’s Manual or on the RMV website:

To Take Your Road Test using a Safe Roads Driving Academy Car

• Send in a completed Safe Roads Driving AcademyRoad Test Sponsorship Formwith $70.00. Once received we will book your road test for you using the information you supplied,as soon as it is booked, you will be notified as to time, date and location.

IMPORTANT:Whether you take a road test with Safe Roads or on your own:

1)Bring your permit

2)Bring a completed RMV Road Test Application.

3)If possible prepay your RMV fees in person at the RMV or on the phone857-368-8000 as they do not currently accept these fees online. The current fees are;
