LIVING FAITH

Last week the Holy Father, Pope Francis, met with hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world for World Youth Day in Poland. In a meadow outside of the city of Krakow, he challenged the crowds with home spun words and down to earth possibilities. His message was lofty, but on target with youth culture. “The times we live in do not call for young “couch potatoes”, but for young people with shoes, or better, boots laced.” With a keen eye and challenging heart, the Holy Father simply challenged the dynamic youth of the world to get off the couch, put away the video games and cell phones and do something for others to show their faith in the presence of God in our world. Faith isn’t simply a comfort blanket for times of troubles or an avenue of prayer for times of need, but real faith is brought alive in engaging with those who deeply mattered to Jesus in his mission to proclaim the Kingdom of God. It is the poor, the forgotten, the lonely, those in need of support and compassion that are at the heart of Christ’s mission. “Blessed are the poor, for the Kingdom of God is theirs.”

Without hearing the words of Pope Francis and thousands of miles away from downtown Krakow, six young people from our parish family listened to Christ’s call in their hearts and traveled last week to downtown Kearny New Jersey. While there on “mission” they were challenged to open their eyes and hearts to those who are held deeply in Christ’s heart - the poor in many different ways. These young people then spent their time away from video games and sitting on the couch and painted, cleaned and did repairs to facilities in neighborhoods that have long been neglected. In simple ways they brought the Gospel message of hope and possibility to people in need. I believe they returned to Wayne and IHM having gained more than they gave. They learned that faith in Christ is best expressed in actions of the hands, heart and feet to make Him visible to those who, in their poverty, find Him hard to see!

I want to thank Cathy, our Youth Minister, for journeying with them, challenging them and witnessing to them how to best live their growing faith in the Lord. There is no doubt that these fine young people are not the “couch potatoes” the Holy Father lamented, but rather great kids with their “boots laced.”

I thought that as the summer continues you would like to know what great moments of faith are happening here at IHM.

With blessings and love…

Fr. Dan

SOMETHING SPECIAL

Sometimes we would like to do something special either in memory of a loved one or for a special occasion or simply to say “Thank You”. One way we do that is through Mass Intentions. However, it isn’t always possible to get the day or date we would like.

With this in mind, we would like to give you the opportunity to either donate the Bread and Wine we use at all the liturgies for a week or to light the Sanctuary Lamp in someone’s memory for a week. The donation is $10. We have a card for you, either as a reminder or to present to a family. If you would like to make this donation you can stop by the rectory, just as you would to reserve a mass.

Just a reminder, we will accept only one donation for bread and wine and one donation for the sanctuary lamp per week. We will also announce these intentions in the bulletin.

HAVING A PARTY?

Remember the great canopies that belong to the Knights of Columbus? These terrific canopies are now available for your backyard parties with a donation to the Knights! There are three 10’x20’ canopies and one 15’x20’ canopy. Set-up and breakdown are included. This offer is good until the end of September. Call Joe at 973-460-2723 or 973-628-9139.

FEED THE HUNGRY

In the past it has been our mission to take a food collection on the fourth Sunday of the month for the Fr. English Center in Paterson. During this past Lent we collected on a weekly basis and shared the food between the Fr. English Center and the Wayne Interfaith Food Pantry. It was wonderfully successful. Going forward the Food Collection Barrelwill be in the vestibule permanently to receive donation that will be shared with both food pantries. Thank you for your care for those that go hungry in our community and our Diocese.

TRAVEL TOILETRIES

Wondering what to do with all those complimentary hotel toiletry items you’ve collected? These bottles of shampoo, soap and conditioner along with any other unused travel size toiletries, (no mouthwash please), will be well used and much appreciated by the people of Eva’s Shelter in Paterson. A container is located in the vestibule for the ongoing collection of these items.
