St. Michael & St. Francis Xavier Bulletin June 3rd & 4th, 2017 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully .

Pentecost

TOO LARGE?

Several years ago, when I was teaching ninth-graders enrolled in a confirmation preparation program, the students told me that they were really struggling with the whole concept of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. As we all know, those gifts are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. I told the students that receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit is like receiving a pair of jeans that have a waist and length that are simply too large. Rather than exchanging the jeans, we hold on to them until we grow into them. I shared this with them because I realized that at different times in my own life, I had turned to these gifts to get me through some particularly challenging situations.

DRAW STRENGTH FROM THE GIFTS

Everyone who has been confirmed has received the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Too often these gifts lie dormant. Can we even imagine what the world would look like if we shook off our stupor and awoke to the reality of these gifts? Take a moment to reflect on each of them. Every one of us, at some time or another, needs to put into practice one of these gifts. When faced with a difficult decision, draw strength from the gifts of wisdom, understanding, and counsel. When striving to overcome addictive behavior or when working through a difficult marriage issue, draw strength from the gift of fortitude. When asked about your faith, don’t be afraid to turn to the Spirit’s gift of knowledge. Draw strength from the gifts of piety and fear of the Lord as you nurture your faith life through prayer. Pentecost gives us the opportunity to recognize the fact that God has generously poured forth the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Let’s not forget the tremendous potential of the gifts of God’s Spirit.

"Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith; for
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life."

A Message to Our Graduates.

Christian graduates, whatever you do in life, you’ve been formed into more than professionals. You’ve been formed into disciples of Jesus Christ. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. There is something you can give the world that ordinary graduates cannot. It’s something that 12 simple men brought to the world in 33 AD. As you go, you bring the light of Christ, the light of civilization, the light of human dignity, the light of hope.

Remember what your parents see and what God sees in you. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We need you to remind us who He is and who we are.

Servers: Some insight of the duties as an altar server will involve everything from assisting the priest to lighting candles, carrying the books used at Mass and saying prayers. We are in need of Servers at St. Michael -Adults or Youth!! Please contact Fr. Tully for Altar Server Training

Pentecost Sunday

Theme: God’s breath –the Holy Spirit-Gives us true life & peace.

Easter-The sound of Alleluias fills the 50 days of Easter Sunday to Pentecost as we give thanks for the gift of our salvation. The Easter Triduum recalls the passion and resurrection of Christ in the sacred journey from Holy Thursday to Easter Vigil, “Dying he destroyed our death. Rising he restored our life.”

Step 1: As you hear this reading what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart?

Step 2: Look into your life.

Children: Jesus tells us that we need to forgive to have peace. Name one way that you can forgive a friend or classmate?

Youth & Adults: St. Paul tells us that we all have unique gifts for the good of others. What is special about you? How can you use those gifts to help others-friends, family or strangers?

Prayer for Our Troops”

Dear Lord… We thank you for the lives and service of our men and women in the Armed Forces. Strengthen them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way to protect our nation and way of life. May they face each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did: with courage dignity and faith. And if it be Your will when their work is through bring them safely home. Lord please also bless the families of our troops. Reward them generously for their sacrifices which are known only to You. May we never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety: those who have died in the service of our country. May they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom.

We encourage parents to attend Mass with their children. This enables the children to integrate what they learn in their Faith Formation classes with weekly participation in the liturgy.
