Drama PhD Research Development Programme

School of English & Drama, Queen Mary, University of London

2014-15

Three kinds of research training are on offer to PhD students in Drama: (1) School and Department training, which is outlined in this document, along with the College-wide induction day and impact event for Year-2 students; (2) Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty training administered by the Learning Institute, and (3) College-wide training provided by the Learning Institute: their activities are listed online (and tend to be generic, e.g. reading strategically and analytically; managing your time and workload, writing effectively; engaging the public with your research). A list of College-wide training opportunities can be found here: and booked here: More information about the Learning Institute’s Research Development programme can be found here: Details of additional training offered by our partners in the London Arts and Humanities Partnership will be released to you as they become available.

Year-1, 2 & 3 PhD students should consult the Appendix, in which the points-based system is explained. Other students may wish to consult the Appendix for an alternative arrangement of training events. Students may find it helpful to self-audit their training needs from time to time, and can do so using the documentation provided by the LI ( Please keep a record of training events that you have attended (this is useful for documenting your professional development and identifying areas for further development).

TA Training: please see below for details of TA training. Students who would like to teach are encouraged to attend classes for Level 4 modules taught by members of staff in advance of commencing teaching (Semester 1: Making Theatre Work, London/Culture/Performance, Languages of the Body, Performance Texts; Semester 2: Performance in History, Theatre and its Others, Interventions, Staging the Image). Please consult the module handbooks and timetables on QM+ and contact the module convenor to arrange a time to visit their class(es).

Compulsory activities are asterisked throughout with an indication of which PhD students by year of registration should attend.

APPENDIX FOR YEAR-1, 2 & 3 PhD STUDENTS

The College is piloting a credit-based scheme for graduate training. This means that for every training activity (in certain cases for a certain number of activities of a certain type) you will be awarded points. These are divided into four types—knowledge and intellectual abilities (A); personal effectiveness (B); research governance (C); engagement and impact (D)—according to a schema (devised by Vitae, the Careers Research and Advisory Centre, for the Research Councils, Activities have been given notional points in whichever category is merited. You can accrue points for each of the three kinds of research training offered: (1) School and Department training [outlined in this document]; (2) Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty training (administered by the Leaning Institute); (3) Learning Institute activities.

Over the course of your PhD programme, you will be expected to accrue 210 points in total, with minimum points in each of the ‘types’ as follows: A (knowledge/intellectual abilities) 60; B (personal effectiveness) 30; C (research organization) 15; D (engagement / impact) 40; students are expected to accrue 70 points by nine months into their programme of study (18 months for part-time students) (A=20, B=10, C=5, C=10). Once you have accrued the minimum number of points in each domain, the balance of points required to reach the target can be gained in any domain(s). Points are not difficult to accrue; as you will see from the list below, you are awarded points (up to a maximum for each activity) for attending seminars and reading groups, for giving conference papers (both in the School or College and externally), and for attending compulsory inductions. If you undertake an activity (like a training course outside the College, or organising a conference) for which you believe you should be awarded points, this can be negotiated with the Director of Graduate Studies and the Learning Institute. Your progress in accruing points will be monitored at each of the progression stages during your PhD. Points are recorded via the Points Skills Database:

This appendix lists activities by type, for School and Department activities, as well as including the compulsory College induction (for all other Learning Institute and Humanities and Social Sciences faculty activities, which are optional, you need to consult the relevant schedules). The points/credits awarded for activities aimed at third-year PhD students are notional because only Year-1, 2 & 3 students are subject to this programme; you will have an indication, however, of the number of points you will accrue for these activities in future years.

Note for students who have completed one or more academic years: if you attend a session that you previously attended, you will be awarded ‘half points’ for these events (e.g. if you attended the Approaching Performance seminar ‘Theorising Spectatorship’ during 2012/13 you will have been awarded 2 points; if you attend the same session during 2013/14 you will be awarded 1 point). The codes for these repeat events are identified in purplebelow (‘half points’ do not apply to Writing Retreats). Although some events don’t carry points for repeat attendance you are still welcome to attend them.
