ROSS DRAGON BOATING EVENT – RISK ASSESSMENT

This assessment covers the Dragon Boating Event only.

HAZARDCONTROLSLIKELIHOODSEVERITY RISK

With controls in place

High WaterRace Committee to assess river level during the LowHigh Med

week preceding & throughout the event.

If above the 8th step down (marked in Red) and rising

the Race Committee to consider suspension of

racing.

Low WaterShallows and obstacles on or near the course to be LowLow Low

buoyed. Hay bales to be used to mark areas of high risk.

Other RiverLocal canoe companies will be advised of the dates LowLow Low

Usersand event logistics.

Racing to be stopped for large groups who shall be

marshaled at the start until permitted to pass.

Racing need not be suspended for small groups who

undertake to keep close to the right hand bank.

Stormy Racing to be suspended on order of any official if LowMed Low

Weather thunder follows lightening within 30 seconds.

All participants to seek safe shelter (ie not tents,

marquees etc) until 30 minutes after the storm has passed.

WindyRace Committee to consider suspending racing if too LowMed Low

Weatherwindy for crews to align in a controlled manner at the start.

Cold/WetCrews should wear sufficient clothing to protect against MedLow Low

Weatherthe weather.

HotCrews to be reminded to cover up and wear headgear LowLow Low

Weatherto avoid sunburn/stroke

Boating All crews will be steered by competent PGL staff LowMed Low

who will be advised of river hazards.

IncidentAll races to be followed by a safety boat who will LowMed Low

on themanage any incident requiring attention.

waterIndividuals who have been involved in accidents to be taken to the

First Aid Station at the clubhouse. Racing to restart once the

safety boat has returned to its station.

Safety/Undertaken by the club's own members who are suitably LowMedLow

Rescuetrained to RYA Level 2 with Rescue endorsement.

ServicesTo comprise a crew of 2. Given the proximity of the First Aid station it is not

considered necessary for the crew to have First Aid certification.

The priority will be to convey the rescued person to the First Aid

Station as quickly and as safely as possible.

Boats to be equipped according to Row Safe requirements including

throw lines and rescue tubes.

Given the drivers ability and the nature of the river, the use of

"tin fish" type boats is considered acceptable.

FoodHot food is prepared to order. LowLow Low

Preparation order. Raw materials to be kept refrigerated until ready

Distribution to use. Personnel to conform to standard rules of hygiene.

CampingSeparate areas for Family camping and Lively camping are LowLow Low

provided. Loud music must cease after midnight.

Ground based BBQ's not permitted.

Welfare In line with the BR Safeguarding and Protecting Children LowLow Low

and vulnerable Adults Policy we are committed to making the

welfare of children paramount . All children regardless of age,

gender, ethnicity religion or ability, have equal rights to safety and

protection.

All suspicions, concerns and allegations of harm will be taken

seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately.

The club Welfare Officer is a member of the Race Committee

and will be in attendance with contact number

on display should any welfare issue need addressing.

General:

Crews, supporters and guests will be asked to wear appropriate footwear at all times

to avoid cuts form sharp object which may be hidden from view.

There is a public telephone in the clubhouse corridor and a list of emergency numbers.

Prior to the event letters will be sent to Police, Hospital and Ambulance Authority

advising type of event, location, possible numbers and directions to the riverbank for

the latter.
