Save this document in a folder in to keep it intact for use in future projects. Then save it again with a new name corresponding to the title of your book. Do not click “SAVE.” Instead click “SAVE AS” and put the file in a different folder on your hard drive. Be sure to save it as a Word Document. Note: this document is saved to the Word 97-2003 (.doc) format. If you want to save to the .docx format, make that selection when you save.

Open the document from your named book folderand personalize the information on the title page. Note: The page count is set to exclude the title page. To begin writing, go to page one(the first numbered page) and double click on “CHAPTER ONE.” Type in the chapter number and title.

This template is set to double space with standard one-inch margins on an 8.5x11 page. Text is standardized to the Times New Roman font in black, size 12. Paragraph indentions are set to .5 inches. Do not use the space or tab key for indenting first lines of paragraphs. Use a single space at the end of each sentence. Paragraphs are set to left justified (ragged right edge).

To assemble a several chapters into one document, insert a page break between chapters. Place your cursor at the end of the last sentence, select the Insert tab on the menu bar, select the Pages Menu and click Page Break. Always begin a chapter on a new page, and type the chapter number and name 3.5” from the top of the page.

Before submitting your manuscript, check the submission guidelines (usually found on the website) of the publisher or agent. Follow guidelines carefully.
