QAA recognised Access to HE Diplomas are made up of 60 credits, 45 of which must be achieved at Level 3, with the remaining 15 credits being achieved at either Level 2 or Level 3. Individual Level 3 units can be achieved at pass, merit or distinction grades. There is no overall grade for an Access Diploma. Access students are often on a steep learning curve, usually pursuing their course over one year, and are not allowed to resubmit work to improve individual unit grades. A second more detailed reference can be provided early in the Spring Term, once the student has submitted a greater volume of work for assessment.
