BACKGROUND TO THE POST OF TECHNICIAN – MEDIA AND VISUAL ARTS

The Technician role will be to work, under the supervision of the Senior Technician, within the Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Media Department (VAPAM) at Thomas Rotherham College. This would involve working with a team of technicians mainly supporting staff and students in the creative technical work of the VAPAM department but also offering some support to the Languages department when needed.

You would primarily work with staff and students to support the production of high quality audio-visual productions in Media and Film. This involves both technical support to ensure equipment is maintained and readied for use, as well as working with students in the classroom offering training and advice around the use of software and hardware. Both technical and creative abilities are therefore essential, as is the ability to communicate well with young people aged 16-19 and staff.

The job is based within the VAPAM department and so involves some occasional work in Photography, Graphics, Music, Art, and Performing Arts as well as in the Language labs - especially around exams and exhibition time. You will also liaise with others to provide technical support for wider college events, commonly for enrichment and college events. As the work is varied, and requires dealing with a range of hardware and software, it requires someone who is confident with IT applications, flexible, creative and can work as part of a team.

You would be contributing to the proper care and maintenance of equipment; including the video-editing suite, our DSLR cameras and production accessories. This includes demonstrating the use of equipment and software in the classroom and filming (on and off site).
