6. BRIEF REVIEW OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1. NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Ayurveda is a medical science which descended thousands of years ago. Ayurveda is the science of life which promotes positive health, prevents diseases and helps in achieving long life.

The human being of the present era is running behind his endless desires. To meet these desires, he changes his life style which includes irregular, faulty dietary pattern,inadequate time for relaxation, no entertainment and suppression of natural urges and keeping away from nature. So by these reasons the man getting diseases like headache and hypertension etc.

Panchakarma therapy aims at cleansing the body from the root level of the accumulated Doshas. Nasya is one of the Panchakarma procedure. The drugs or medicated liquids like Sneha, Swarasa etc.administered through the nostrils is known as Nasya. This procedure purges and rejuvenates the tissue and organs of the head and neck.

Ardhavabhedaka is one of the shiroroga. According to Susruta1, headache which is present in the right or left halves of the head which is of splitting, pricking, or churning in nature. Headache appearing in interval of either 10 or 15 days or in month without any known cause is called as Ardhavabhedaka. When it is greatly aggravated it destroys either the vision or hearing.

Vidangadi Nasya is mentioned in Bhavaprakash Madhya Khanda in Shiroroga. Shirovirechaka and Tridoshahara Nasya will provide relief to the patient of Ardhavabhedaka. Vidangadi Nasya is having Shirovirechaka and Tridoshahara property.

Hence a clinical study is proposed to evaluate the efficacy of Vidangadi Nasya in the management of Ardhavabhedaka.

6.2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Classical literature of Ayurvedic science described Ardhavabhedaka under the

Heading of Siroragas.

  • Charaka has explained the Nidana, Samprapti, Lakshanas and Chikitsa2.
  • Sushruta has explained the Lakshana and Sadhya Sadhyata3.
  • Detailed description of Nasya Karma is explained in almost all classical texts4, 5, 6.
  • Description of Vidangadi Nasya present in Bhaishajya Ratnavali7 and Bhava Prakash8.

6.3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Nasya in the management of Ardhavabhedaka.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of Vidangadi Nasya in management of Ardhavabhedaka.

7. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

7.1. SOURCE OF DATA:

(a)Patients:

Patients suffering from Ardhavabhedaka willbe selected from O.P.D. of SJG Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital as preset inclusion and exclusion criteria.

(b) Literary:

Literary aspect of study will be collected from Ayurvedic classics and contemporary texts including the journals and website about the disease and drug will be reviewed and documented for intended study.

(c) Preparation of medicine:

Vidangadi Swarasa will be prepared in R.S. and B.K. of SJG Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Koppal.

7.2. COMPOSITION OF TRIAL DRUG:

(a) Medicine for Nasya: Vidangadi Nasya

Take equal part of Vidanga and Tila seeds, compound both these drugs in water to obtain the swarasa9.

7.3. METHODS OF COLLECTION OF DATA:

(a) Study Design:

Single blind clinical study.

(b) Sample Size and Grouping:

Minimum of 30 patients diagnosed as Ardhavabhedaka, which fulfilling the inclusive criteria will be selected.

(c) Inclusive Criteria:

  • Patients having the classical signs and symptoms of Ardhavabhedaka.
  • Patients aged between 16-60 years of either sex.
  • Patients fit for Nasya karma.

(d) Exclusive Criteria:

  • Patients having Shiroroga other than Ardhavabhedaka like Suryavarta etc.
  • Patients having any inflammatory diseases of nose and ear.
  • Patients having a history of head trauma.
  • Involvement of other systemic diseases.
  • Age group less than 16 and more than 60 years.
  • Patients unfit for Nasya Karma.

(e) Diagnostic Criteria:

Diagnosis will be made according to the classical signs and symptoms.

(f) Posology:

Nasya Karma with Vidangadi Swarasa 6drops in each nostril10

(g) Procedure for Administration of Medicine:

  • PURVA KARMA :

SthanikaAbhyanga with TilaTaila followed by BhaspaSweda.

  • PRADHANA KARMA :

Vidangadi SwarasaAvapeedanaNasya to both nostrils daily in the morning in empty stomach with dose of 6 drops in each nostril.

  • PASCHAT KARMA:

Kavala with SukhoshnaJala

(h) Study Duration:

  • Total 21days.
  • Treatment duration will be for 7 days.
  • Follow up for 14 days.
  • Readings will be observed on 0,7th, 14th and 21st day.

(i) Assessment of Result:

Subjective and objective parameters of baseline data to post medication data will be compared for the assessment of result.

(j) Subjective Parameters:
