Advanced Sheet-metal Forming Committee (ASFC) Annual Report 2012
- New name and Terms of Reference
Year 2012 has seen an extensive discussion amongst committee members with a clear objective for reforming the existing Superplasticity Committee. In consultation with other committees under the MSTD, a new has been agreed with a remit defined as: “the ASFC will provide forum to exchange information and promote state-of-the-art practice on all aspects of Sheet Metal Forming (SMF). ASFC seeks to identify technical challenges associated with various SMF processes and to disseminate knowledge of alloys behaviour throughout the forming stages.” Also a new set of activities and general strategy have been agreed (see full copy of Terms of Reference in the attached document)

It was decided at the last meeting that the committee will ensure there is a diverse and sufficient representation in its membership. In addition to academics and researchers, four major industrial groups have been identified: OEMsfrom aerospace and automotive, T1 supply chain to thesesectors, material suppliers and highly specialised start-up companies. It was also agreed that reaching out to the wider community of SMEs will be channelled through the representative of CBM. Final list of members is expected to be ready by the next meeting in Feb 2013.

Three meetings are scheduled for 2013:

-12th June (CBM in Midland)
-11th Sept (to be held parallel to EuroSPF 2013)
- Technical programme
The committee was heavily involved in the11th International Conference on Superplasticity in Advanced Materials (ICSAM 2012), which was held in Albi France 3rd - 5th July 2012. There were more than 65 papers, 15 posters and 140 delegates in total. Ten members of AFSC have participated in the conference; two of them are in the ICSAM International Board. Total number of papers presented by committee members was 12, including two keynote talks.
The committee, in collaboration with the European SPF Committee, will organise the EuroSPF-2013 Conference to be held in Germany in Sept 2013. The committee will also start getting more involved in the Shemet conference series. It was agreed that rather than starting another series of conferences, beside the EuroSPF, to cover wider SMF activities it would be more effective to join the Shemet series; next conference will be held in Belfast at the University of Ulster 25th – 27th March
