Job Description
Role and Responsibilities
To perform high quality surgical nursing while assisting each surgeon in all oral surgery procedures in a safe and effective manner in accordance with the ‘Code of Ethics’ of Ontario and the CNO requirements and recommendations to nursing staff. The performance of these duties is under the direction of the Doctors and of the General Manager as required.
Key Tasks
• Administer Narcotics and other associated drugs as directed by the surgeon and protocol defined for the specific surgical procedure being performed. Fully monitor and recover patient.
• Setting up and preparing the surgery before the start of each session
• Provide chair-side assistance, ensuring that the correct equipment is available
• Clean and disinfect all equipment and working surfaces to the required standards at the end of each surgical or clinical procedure
• Keep the clinical areas and all equipment, laundry, wrapping and instruments clean, tidy and sterile as appropriate according to the practice’s health and safety and infection control procedures and manufacturers' instructions. Careful attention is to be paid to asepsis protocols and proper tray setups, etc.
• Always ensure the care and welfare of patients in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner
• Accurately complete patient clinical records as directed
• Observe patient confidentiality at all times
• Perform chaperoning duties for the surgeons when treating patients
• Handle all substances in accordance with Health and Safety policies
• Be familiar and comply with all Health and Safety rules and guidance, infection control, and ensure safe disposal of sharps and clinical waste
• Develop and file radiographs
• Ensure computer/written records are accurately maintained and securely stored
• Undergo training as may be required to develop your skills and abilities
• Attend refresher and update training for medical emergencies, BCLS and ACLS
• Act in accordance with the practice rules and code of conduct
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Successful completion of the CRNE and registered with the CNO. Experience in the oral surgery field an asset.
