Biblical words, underlined with dots, are explained in the brackets.

1. Know, Know Know—it deals primarily with the mind.

2. Theologically, we must realize the biblical truth that we are crucified with Christ, buried with Him and raised alive (to God) and dead ( to sin.)

3. We must be dead to ourselves (ie., our sin) and alive to Christ as victory over sin will be in direct proportion to His victory over us.



Paul Introduces God’s Threefold Method Leading to a Changed Life in Christ:

1. Know—centers on the mind.

2. Reckon—centers on the heart.

A. May there be a reckoning in your heart

Romans 6:11, NKJV - 11Likewise you also, reckon[see below] yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:11, HCSB - 11So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Reckon: Gk: λογίζομαι, low-GIZ-oh-my, is used 41x in the NT (19x in Romans); it’s translated “count, reckon, impute” and means “to take into account, to calculate, to put into one’s account.” Practically, it means to, by faith, believe that what God says in His Word is rally true in your life. (Logos means “word”, Gizomi means “manage”—we must manage this word (truth) correctly.Once we add up the figures (ie., truth) and come to an irrefutable conclusion.)

B. May there be a relinquishing in your heart.

Romans 6:12–13, HCSB - 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. 13And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.

Romans 6:12–13, NLT - 12Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

C. May there be a realization in your heart.

Romans 6:14, HCSB - 14For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 6:14, NLT - 14Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.

Life Application Section: “Understanding God’s Grace”

God’s

Riches

At

Christ’s

Expense

2 Corinthians 8:9, NASB95 - 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

Ephesians 2:8, NASB95 - 8For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God….

/ By God’s grace, we must be dead to ourselves and alive to Christ as our victory over sin will be in direct proportion to His victory over us.
