Dr. Hoon Mok Chung Memorial Award

The Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Dr. Hoon Mok Chung Memorial Award.

The Chung Award was established in honor Dr. Hoon Mok Chung (1939-2005), a professor of political science at Illinois State University from 1971 to 1979. Following his years at Illinois State, Dr. Chung became president of the Import-Export Bank of Korea, special advisor to two presidents of the Republic of Korea, and executive director of the Asian Development Bank. He was also chairman of Hyundai Construction and Engineering, and director of the World Bank. The Chung Award is funded by the Hoon Mok Chung Memorial Fund, established by Gary Talarico, a former student of Chung's at Illinois State University.

Eligibility:

Each candidate for a Hoon Mok Chung Award must:

Ø  Be enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University.

Ø  Be a Junior or Senior at the time the award is executed.

Ø  Have earned at least 30 credits at Illinois State University; they should be the most recent 30 earned.

Ø  Major GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Ø  Demonstrate financial need.

Ø  Submit the application below to Frank Beck, Director of the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development

*Preference will be given to students pursuing training in a language of Asia or the Middle East.

**High preference will be given to those students who have not previously travelled outside the United States.

Awardees will participate in a study abroad experience or work with a non-governmental organization in Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America. The award is to defray travel, tuition, and living expenses during the study abroad experience. The student may receive direct funds, or may have some of their expenses paid directly. Award decisions are made at the discretion of the Director of the Stevenson Center and a committee of faculty. Receipt of this award may have an impact on other financial aid that a student receives.

Letters of Recommendation:

In addition to the Faculty/Staff Recommendation form due to the Office of International Studies, two letters of recommendation must be sent to Frank Beck, Director of the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the recommendation letters are received on time. The letters must be sent by the referees directly to the Stevenson Center. References should note the student’s academic qualities, as well as ability to complete the study abroad experience in a productive way.
