To whom it may concern:

I would like to invite your school and its students to sign up for the first annual Taiwan Debate Camp (see the details below). You can distribute the attached forms to your students as well as to your staff.

As the letter indicates, the school can register its students as a group, but students can also register independently. Thus, your school does not have to officially send a group because the students can register by themselves.

Please explain to students that the goal of the camp is to educate as many students as possible from as many schools, but space is limited. Therefore, students need to apply early, and I may need to limit the number from each school so as to spread the knowledge as widely as possible

Tentatively, we plan a second camp for this summer.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daniel R. Fruit

FIRST ANNUAL WORLD SCHOOL TAIWAN DEBATE CAMP

Dr. Daniel R. Fruit and the International Bilingual School at the South Tainan Science Park (IBST), with the cooperation of the National Nanke International Experimental High School (NNKIEHS), will offer the first annual World School Taiwan Debate Camp. The camp will take place January 30-February 3rd (Wednesday to Sunday) 2013. The camp will provide intensive instruction and ample practice matches World School style debate that occur yearly and to which Taiwan now has permission to send a team. As many as 50 students may sign up for the camp with spaces going on a first-come first serve basis.

Students at the debate camp will stay on-campus at IBST on dorms provided by NNKIEHS.Students will be provided with chaperoned housing and opportunities to participate in night-time activities such as a talent show, treasure hunt, and football (soccer) match. Students will be provided with 3 meals, and a 7-11 is within a quick walk with some larger restaurants a couple of blocks away. The South Taiwan Science Park, which includes NNKIEHS/IBST, boasts its own train stop and a shuttle bus that goes from the train station as well as stopping throughout the Science Park.

During the day students will participate in intensive learning activities designed to improve their skills and thinking, as well as introduce them to World Style Debate. With students coming from all-over Taiwan as well as IBST, students should have plenty of opportunity to hone their skills as well as making new friends as activities will mix members.

A tentative outline of topic for this camp would include:

Day 1: speaker responsibilities, resolution analysis, basic planning, audience/expectations

Day 2: preparing smarter, “plans,” advantages/disadvantages, case and off-case arguing

Day 3: countersplans, countering counterplans, perming without hair..Ks, u be the judge

Day 4: fallacies and sophistries, humor, teamwork, values and style; debate off-day 1

Day 5: final “debate off” final awards ceremony

Camp graduates will have the knowledge and skills to do two things. (1) Teach other students at their school how to do World Style Debate and/or (2) participate in the October try-outs for Taiwan’s 2014 which will enter the World School Debate Championships (probably in Peru).

Next year’s try-outs will allow for two kinds of teams: (1) School-based teams and (2) Ad Hoc teams which can come from one school or more than one but enter the event independently of any school. Attending this camp does NOT guarantee a student a place on next year’s team.

For the camp, students will need to pay NTD 3,000. This will cover the costs of the dorm fees, food, instruction, materials, and any incidental fees.

Students wishing to participate need to email Dr. Daniel R. Fruit at
