Objective:

Procedure: See p. 247-248
of Dr. Cupp Readers and Journal Writers Manual, Part 1. (All phonics lessons are scripted.)
P. 6-To introduce open syllables, the teacher will repeat the same Word House story from Lesson 28. The story is found on pages 24 and 25 in The Word House Book.
The teacher then uses the red attic room (the red box on the top of page 240 in The Word House Book to demonstrate how fi, tri, sta, and bro were not blocked, and they fell off the roof. When they fell, they went a long way down. They changed their vowel sounds to long vowel sounds.
The teacher will write the word hotel on the board. The word looks like the o and the e are both blocked, but in bigger multi-syllable words, students must first see the words in parts instead of the whole word. This word is divided into ho tel. The o inhotelmakes a long sound because the vowel is not blocked. It goes a long way. The e in hotel makes a short sound because it is blocked by the l. The e only goes a short way. The word hotel could be divided intohot el; however it would not make sense if divided this way.
P 7- Students should practice sounding out words with either the Tool Box Card Decks or page 6 and 7.
