DR. CHRISTOPHER WOLFE WILL DISCUSS NEED FOR MARRIAGE AMENDMENT ON SEPTEMBER 17

Chris Wolfe has been a professor of political science at Marquette University for almost 30 years. He graduated summa cum laude from Notre Dame in 1971 and received his Ph.D. from Boston College in 1978. He is the author of four books, published in 1986, 1991, 2000 and 2006. His 1986 book, The Rise of Modern Judicial Review, was recently named by Judge Robert Bork as one of five best books available on the Constitution of our country. Dr. Wolfe has also published articles in scholarly journals and law reviews. In addition, he has lectured at universities in Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Austria, Romania and Hungary, in addition to 35 American Universities.

Dr. Wolfe is the founder and President of the American Public Philosophy Institute (APPI) which seeks to give natural law theory a more salient expression in current scholarly and public discussions. APPI sponsored conferences have led to a series of edited volumes on important public policy issues including Homosexuality and American Public Life (Spence Publishing Co., 1999) and Same-Sex Matters (Spence Publishing Co., 2000). Dr. Wolfe is a well known expert on issues of homosexuality and same-sex marriage, and has given legislative testimony on the subject.

In December, 2004, Dr. Wolfe joined forces with Fulvio di Blasi, an Italian natural law scholar, to promote the Thomas International project, of which he is Vice-President. Dr. Wolfe is the co-director of the Ralph McInerny Center for Thomistic Studies, and from 2006 to 2008, he will split his time between Marquette University and the McInerny Center. After 2008, Dr. Wolfe will be at the Center, located in South Bend, Indiana, full time.

CHECK OUT OUR CHAPTER’S NEW WEB SITE:

After many months of discussion regarding the possibility of a Web site for our local Chapter, it has finally happened! With much gratitude to board member, Jerry Schmutte, we are now “on the web.” This will allow us to provide more information to more people. For example, we have posted the complete version of Dr. Wolfe’s biographical data for those who may wish to know, for instance, the titles of his published books (which space did not permit us to include in the newsletter). You can find us at “cufmilwaukee.org”

ARCHBISHOP DOLAN ELECTS TO MAINTAIN CONFIRMATION IN ELEVENTH GRADE

As announced in the July 6 Catholic Herald, the age for the sacrament of Confirmation will continue to be sixteen. This was a great disappointment for the more than 1200 people who signed the petition asking that Confirmation be returned to the grade school years where it was before Archbishop Weakland moved it to high school. Not surprisingly, a great majority of the youth ministers and catechists who attended the two “Confirmation meetings” in January and February (very few parents attended the meetings because parents were simply not told about the meetings) endorsed eleventh grade Confirmation primarily, they explained, because it allowed these young people to “make a mature, adult commitment to the faith.” Unfortunately, this flies in the face of statements made by Bishop Alvaro Corrada, S.J., in his “Pastoral Reflection on the Sacrament of Confirmation,” published on October 7, 2005, in the diocese of Tyler, Texas. On pages 6 and 7 of the Pastoral he clearly states, “Confirmation is not about an individual deciding to embrace the faith of Baptism. It is not a human act similar to that of non-Catholic Christians who, perhaps in their early teens, choose to publicly profess that they have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Sacraments are primarily about God choosing and embracing us not the other way around.” Unfortunately, as our Confirmation candidates continue to be encouraged to “make a mature commitment to the faith,” this diocese appears to have it “the other way around.”

DEDICATION DAY ON SEPTEMBER 8 WILL MARK FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY AT AQUINAS ACADEMY

On the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, Friday, September 8, Aquinas Academy will mark its fifteenth anniversary with the dedication of a shrine to Our Blessed Mother in thanksgiving for her love and protection. To help fund the beautiful, Italian marble statue, Aquinas is selling bricks ($200 each) which can be inscribed to honor graduates, students, friends, deceased family members, etc. The bricks will provide a walkway and patio surrounding the statue. To purchase a brick or to make a donation, please call Marlene at 262-502-1540.
