Don Koharski, Louise Leblanc, Bob Stanton and Ken Porter Sr. win awards from Sports Officials Canada
OTTAWA — Sports Officials Canada announced today that NHL referee Don Koharski has won the Ron Foxcroft Award for officiating excellence in professional sport. The Dartmouth, N.S., native officiated his last NHL game this season after a 32-year career.
He was one of four winners announced by the SOC for its annual awards.
Koharski appeared in his first NHL game as a linesman on Oct. 14, 1977, made his NHL referee debut on November 18, 1981 and officiated his last game on April 9.
In all, Koharski appeared in 1,882 regular season games, 262 playoff games, 11 Stanley Cup finals, two All-Star Games, two Canada Cups, and the 2004 World Cup. He is the league's second-most senior official, behind only referee Kerry Fraser. He will stay on with the NHL in a supervisory or instructional position.
Sports Officials Canada and Fox 40 International Inc. sponsor an annual National Officiating Awards Program recognizing a male and a female technical official/judge who have made a significant contribution to officiating at the national and international level. The award, the "FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence" is in honour of the late Kitch MacPherson of Hamilton Ontario in recognition of his service as a referee in the sport of basketball.
This year's female recipient is Louise Leblanc of Ile Perrot, QC. Leblanc is one of the top swimming officials in Canada. In addition to her many hours dedicated to the sport at the grassroots level, Leblanc’s assignments include the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, the 2007 National Age Group Championships and the 2008 Olympic swimming trials in Montreal.
The male honouree is softball official Robert "Bob" Stanton of Fredericton, NB. A 27-year veteran official and technical administrator, Stanton worked at a multitude of provincial and national Championships, the 1999 Pan American Games and several other international competitions as an umpire. He was Softball Canada’s Umpire of the Year in 1998 and in 2008.
Veteran track and field official Ken Porter of Victoria, BC received Allen G. Rae Builder Award for his significant contribution to sports official's development and advancement.
Over his 45-year career Porter officiated at every major national and international event including the 1976 Olympic Games, 1978 Commonwealth Games, 1983 World University Games, 1999 Pan-American Games and the 2001 World Championships. He was the B.C. Athletics Official of the Year in 1978, and was inducted into the B.C. Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
The awards will be presented on Saturday September 26, 2009 at the Sports Officials Canada Annual Awards Dinner, being held in conjunction with their annual conference at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

OTTAWA — Officiels sportifs Canada a annoncé aujourd'hui que l'arbitre de la LNH Don Koharski a remporté le prix Ron Foxcroft remis pour l'excellence de l'arbitrage dans un sport professionnel. De Dartmouth, N.-É., il vient de terminer sa dernière saison dans la LNH après une carrière de 32 ans.
Il était l'un des quatre gagnants des prix annuels qu'OSC a décernés.
Koharski est apparu pour la première fois dans une partie de la LNH comme juge de ligne, le 14 oct. 1977, il a fait ses débuts comme arbitre de la LNH le 18 novembre 1981 et a arbitré sa dernière partie le 9 avril dernier.
Au total, Koharski est apparu dans 1882 parties de saisons régulières, 262 parties éliminatoires, 11 finales de la Coupe Stanley, deux parties d'Étoiles, deux Coupes Canada et à la Coupe du monde de 2004. Il est le deuxième plus ancien de la ligue, tout juste derrière Kerry Fraser. Il demeurera avec la LNH dans un poste de superviseur ou de formateur.
Officiels sportifs Canada et Fox 40 International Inc. commanditent le programme des prix annuels canadiens remis à des officiels sportifs pour rendre hommage à un officiel/juge technique ou à une officielle/juge technique pour leur contribution significative comme officiel/officielle sur la scène internationale et nationale. Le prix d'excellence "FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson" a été créé en l'honneur du regretté Kitch MacPherson de Hamilton, Ontario en souvenir de ses réalisations comme arbitre de basketball.
La récipiendaire de 2009, chez les femmes est Louise Leblanc de l'Ile Perrot, Qué. Leblanc est l'une des meilleures officielles de natation au Canada. En plus de ses nombreuses heures consacrées au sport chez les débutants, Mme Leblanc a été affectée aux Championnats PanPacifique de 2006 à Victoria, au Championnat canadien par groupe d'âges de 2007 et aux Essais de natation olympique de 2008 à Montréal.
Le récipiendaire masculin et l'officiel de softball Robert "Bob" Stanton de Fredericton, N.-B. Vétéran officiel depuis 27 ans et administrateur technique, Stanton a travaillé lors d'une multitude de championnats canadiens et provinciaux, aux Jeux Panaméricains de 1999 et à de nombreuses autres compétitions comme arbitre. Il était l'Arbitre de l'année 1998 et 2008 de Softball Canada.
Vétéran officiel en piste et pelouse, Ken Porter de Victoria C.-B. a reçu le prix du bâtisseur Allen G. Rae pour sa contribution significative au développement et à l'avancement des officiels du sport.
Au cours de sa carrière de 45 ans, Porter a arbitré à tous les événements importants nationaux et internationaux dont les Jeux olympiques de 1976, les Jeux du Commonwealth de 1978, les Jeux mondiaux universitaires de 1983, les Jeux Panaméricains de 1999 et le Championnat du monde de 2001. Il était l'arbitre de l'année en athlétisme en C.-B en 1978 et il a fait son entrée au Temple de la renommée de l'athlétisme de la C.-B. en 1998.
Les prix seront remis le samedi 26 septembre 2009, au banquet d'honneur annuel d'Officiels sportifs Canada, qui sera présenté à l'occasion de la Conférence annuelle à l'Hôtel et Centre de conférence Delta Meadowvale à Mississauga, Ontario.
