DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WORKER

Job Purpose

To provide support and advice to children and young people and their families who are experiencing domestic violence to contribute towards the care planning process.

The key roles of the post will include:

1.  Provide advocacy, advice and support to victims of domestic violence to keep them and their children safe.

2.  To contribute towards children care plans.

3.  To support parents who have experienced domestic violence to develop safety plans.

4.  To manage a caseload and prioritise and organise their work.

5.  To maintain appropriate records in order to ensure adherence to Council policies and practice.

6.  To follow procedures and protocols in line with Council priorities, procedures and good practice.

7.  Work in partnership with the allocated social worker and other professionals, keeping them informed of any changes in the families’ circumstances.

8.  To assist with data information collection, monitoring and service evaluation.

9.  To work with parents who have experienced domestic violence to understand the impact this may have upon their children.

10.  To work directly with children and young people who have witnessed or experienced the effects of domestic violence.

11.  To provide information and training to the social work team about domestic violence, keeping up to date with research and developments in the field.

12.  Any other duties as determined in accordance with the grading of the post.


Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential / Desirable
Knowledge:
·  The impact of domestic abuse on victims and children.
·  Understanding of child protection procedures and issues and legal responsibilities.
·  Legislative framework in relation to domestic abuse (Civil and Criminal).
·  Understanding of the principles of risk assessment and safety planning.
·  Understanding of, and commitment to, equal opportunities in practice.
·  Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
·  Child development.
Qualifications:
·  Professional qualification or equivalent experience.
·  Willingness to undertake specialist Domestic Violence training.
Experience of:
·  Working with vulnerable people and victims of domestic abuse and their families.
·  Working within a multi-agency partnership.
·  Communicating effectively – written and verbal.
·  Working on own initiative.
·  Working as part of a team.
·  Prioritising and organising workloads.
·  Direct work with children. / Knowledge:
·  The civil and criminal justice remedies relating to domestic abuse.
·  Understanding of the domestic abuse sector and the role and remits of the statutory and voluntary agencies in the sector.
Qualifications:
