Doing Oral Assessments with Wimba Voice Tools

1. Open a web browser. Type in this address (or click on the link on the class webpage):
2. After you type in the web address, you will see the Wimba Voice Tools login screen. Type the email address and the password that your instructor gives you in the boxes, then click ok.
*For EMCC students, your email is your first name and last name with no spaces and no capitals followed by @email.com. For example: . Thepassword is: diane
IMPORTANT NOTE: Check to see if your home computer will run the program correctly by clicking on the link below the words, “Is your computer ready?” It will check your audio and microphone settings. It will give you a link to download a free java software plugin if your computer needs this.
3. After you click the okay button, you will see the welcome screen. You will see two tabs, My Manager and Oral Assessments. On the middle right side of the screen , you will see the Assessments to take box. If the box is empty, there are no assessments for you to do at this time. If the box has aname of an assessment to do, click on the name to begin.
4. VERY IMPORTANT!
The first time you use this program on your home computer, and every time you use it at school, you will see a security warning pop up.
YOU MUST CLICK RUN. If you don’t, the program will not work, and you must close your web browser, then open it again and start from the beginning.
5. After you click on the name of an assessment and then the RUN button, you will see the first question. There are different types of questions:
- Voice dialog questions require you to listen to a question, and then speak an answer into a microphone.
- Fill in the blank questions require you to listen and type in an answer or missing word.
- Multiple choice questions require you to listen and choosea correct answer.
6. Let’s look at a voice dialog question.
First, read the instructions at the top of the webpage or if there is a picture, the instructions will be below it. Sometimes the directions will tell you the minimum amount of time you need to talk (for example 1 minute or more).
After you read the instructions, click the greentriangular play button in the box under the words Voice promptto listen.
Next, click the round record button in the box under the words Voice answer. Start speaking your answer.
To stop recording, be sure to click the square stop button.
After you press the stop button, the play button will turn green on your Voice answer. Listen to your own answer to make sure it recorded okay!
7. If you are not happy with your answer, you can record it again. You can record an answer as many times as you want until you are satisfied. Just click the round record button again.
When you click the record button again, you will see the words “Override current recording? “in the box below the words Voice answer. If you click Yes, then you can record a new answer and your old answer will be erased.
8. When you are happy with your answer, click the words Next question to continue.
9. Let's look at a fill in the blank question.
For this, click the triangular play button in the box under the words Voice Prompt. Listen and look at the sentence below.
Type in the word or wordsthat correctly fill the blank to complete the sentence.
After you type in a missing word or words, click the words next question to continue.
10. The numbers at the bottom middle of the screen tell you what number question you are on and how many total questions there are in the assessment. If you need to stop before you are finished with all the questions, you can click the word Close at any time. Your assessment will be saved for you to continue later.
11. When you arefinished with the last question, click the words Submit answers to send your assessment to the instructor for grading. If you don't click Submit answers, the teacher will not receive your assessment.
12. After you submit your answers, the instructor will look at and listen to your assessment, make comments, and give you a grade.
To see if your assessment has been graded yet, click on the Oral Assessments tab after you login.
13. Click on the words Graded assessments.
14. You will see the name of the assessment and the grade you received. To review your answers, check the correct answers, and to listen to commentsthe instructor made about your pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, click on the picture of the magnifying glass under the wordView at the right of the screen.
15. For questions that you typed answers to, you will see your answerin red. You will see the correct answer in green. There may be comments to listen to or not, but you can see for yourself if you have the correct answer or not.
16. For voice dialog questions that you recorded yourself speaking answers for, listen to the instructor’s comments by clicking the play button. Click the words Next question to continue until you come to the last question, and then you can close the assessment.
