Graduate Student Representative

Elected Volunteer Position Description

Position Purpose and Role

  • To promote the interests of the students
  • To assist and advise the graduate faculty and program on student interests
  • To serve as the link between students and the program director or director delegate

Position Structure and Term

  • Elected students will serve for one calendar year (spring, summer, and fall semester) with position starting January 1st and completing December 31st
  • Students are invited yearly to put names forward toward student nominations by the first Monday in October for voting for the next calendar year appointment.
  • Students who accept nominations will provide voting biographical sketch to include: name, track, biography (inclusive of length of time in program, whether or not student has started internship, etc.), and position interest statement
  • Voting will open the first Monday in November for 2 weeks
  • Students will be elected by confidential online majority vote

Required Position Responsibilities

  • Developing an annual report of students’ Student Representative inquiries
  • Maintaining confidentiality and abiding by FERPA regulations. (See: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/students.html)
  • Maintaining professional presentation and behaviors
  • Referring students to program grievance procedures and to work with advisors and program core faculty
  • Training incoming DBH Graduate Student Liaison in responsibilities
  • Ensuring student interests are brought to the attention of and discussed with program faculty
  • Helping to raise the profile of the DBH degree and professional presentation
  • Encouraging students to communicate with faculty when they have program-related concerns
  • Encouraging students toward utilizing student resources (e.g. student handbook and ASU resources) for success
  • Attending and/or viewing the All Faculty Meetings (held quarterly via webinar)

Optional Position Responsibilities

  • Assisting the program with suggestions related to program and curricula development
  • Assisting with developing further learning opportunities based on student interests
  • Encouraging students toward professional development activities
  • Assisting with the development of the Annual Integrated Healthcare Conference student track topics, benefits, and social/networking opportunities
  • Encouraging students to generate further ideas related to graduate student and professional development and learning
  • Assisting with the development of marketing and educational materials for prospective students and public at large (ie: websites, brochures, Facebook)
  • Assisting with answering questions of prospective students

Position Termination or Removal

  • The student position concludes at the end of the elected term, or upon the representative’s graduation, whichever occurs first
  • The student may be removed from the position at any time with one week’s notice due to program concerns over effective execution of position responsibilities.
  • The student may be removed from this position due to violations of academic and program-related standards as outlined in the policy manual
  • The student may be removed for behavior that is unprofessional or not in the best interest of the program
