The new ACT Aboriginal Justice Centre is seeking to establish a small team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in their new office in the Griffin Centre. The AJC has secured 3 year funding from the ACT Government to facilitate a crime prevention initiative and will be applying to other funding sources to expand services and staff.

The Aboriginal Justice Centre will play a crucial role in reducing the incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT region by facilitating a combination of support, prevention, referral, case management and training programs.

The AJC Board has determined that being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification to service the needs of our clients. In relation to the Case Manager positions, the AJC is aiming to recruit a balance of male and female staff so that it can fully accommodate the needs and preferences of clients and their families.

The selection process will establish an order of merit of suitable candidates and this list may be used to fill vacancies arising over the next 12 months. The Aboriginal Justice Centre is a Public Benevolent Institutional Charity and salary packaging is available to staff.

Duty Statement and Selection Criteria

Duty Statement

  1. Work in an operational environment that involves:
  1. Assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients (youth and adults), and their families.
  2. Implement integrated case management and prevention programs.
  3. Liaising with Police, the Courts, Legal Services and Corrections.
  4. Managing volunteers eg Interview Friends Program.
  5. Undertaking client visitations to those in the criminal justice system.
  6. Linking of clients to services – rehabilitation, housing, employment etc
  7. Professionally managing crises and complaints.
  8. Keeping abreast of current research and being able to adopt best practice to program development.
  9. Understanding roles and responsibilities, maintaining strict confidentiality and upholding the principles and ethics of the AJC and adhering to a code of conduct.
  1. Develop, undertake and facilitate case management for clients in liaison with a wide range of service providers and stakeholders.
  2. Prepare a range of high level written materials including briefs, case management reports, Board Papers and correspondence to support the work of the Aboriginal Justice Centre and it’s clients.
  3. Undertake policy and project work involving research, analysis, consultation, implementation and evaluation, in consultation with the ACT Indigenous community, government and non-government agencies.
  4. Provide input to enable the development of culturally appropriate policies and procedures for the AJC.
  1. Design, facilitate and/or participate in programs including youth prevention programs, awareness and training programs, Interview Friends Program, Circle Sentencing and other community managed/government programs.
  1. Be able to assist clients in accessing the services and complaint mechanisms of the Ombudsman, Human Rights Office, Office of Fair Trading, Police and other bodies.
  1. Assist in the preparation of funding submissions, performance reporting and program monitoring.
  1. Oversee, supervise and assist in managing staff and volunteers in carrying out the functions of the AJC.
  1. Collect, record and present statistical data to demonstrate trends and/or performance.
  1. Liaisewith a range of agencies, community organisations (specifically those related to the Indigenous community) and represent the AJC at meetings, conferences, seminars and case management conferences.
  1. Actively participate as a member of a team and contribute to the effective delivery of culturally appropriate services to the Indigenous community.
  1. Support the CEO and Board to comply with their legal and professional responsibilities.

Selection Criteria – Limit of 500 words per selection criteria

  1. This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified position. Being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position.
  1. Ability to facilitate a case management process sensitively and effectively with a range of diverse ‘at risk’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, including youth and families who have complex issues or needs and require a range of support services.
  1. Ability to exercise sound judgement and operate impartially within various decision making frameworks i.e. cultural, legal, government, non government, community and client. Commitment to model behaviours as per the Aboriginal Justice Centre code of conduct.
  1. Well developed communication skills (both oral and written), including liaison, negotiation, motivational and conflict resolution skills. Ability to use these skills to build strong networks and relationships with a range of diverse Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers and stakeholders to achieve quality outcomes for clients.
  1. Demonstrated capacity to coordinate and facilitate a range of policy and planning workshops and multi-disciplinary case management meetings to address the needs of clients of the AJC.
  1. Possess high level organisational, planning and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and/or manage a team of staff or volunteers.
  1. Demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the principles of workplace diversity, participative work practices and Occupational Health and Safety.

Desirable

  1. Experience and/or tertiary qualifications in an area related to the criminal justice system and/or case management.

  • Given the nature of the position, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal history check.

Remuneration

An employment contract based upon the ACT Social and Community Services Awardwill be negotiated for the position. Above award salaries will be considered. The Aboriginal Justice Centre has Public Benevolent Institutional status from the Australian Tax Office. Interview Panel

An independent interview panel will comprise a minimum of 3 independent persons appointed by the AJC Board and may include:

  • The CEO of the AJC
  • An AJC Inc Board Member
  • A person fulfilling a similar role in another organisation
  • A person representing the funding provider or their nominee
