What is palliative care? / What is palliative care?
Palliative (pal-ee-uh-tiv) care helps relieve symptoms of a disease to help improve a patient’s quality of life, and can be offered at any time during treatment (unlike Hospice Care, which is offered only at end of life). / Palliative care relieves disease symptoms to improve quality of life, & is not just offered at end of life.
Studies have shown that people with chronic illnesses like cancer who get palliative care have reduced symptoms. They have better quality of life, less pain, less shortness of breath, less depression, and less nausea. The risk of getting pancreatic cancer is at least twice as high among smokers compared to those who have never smoked. Scientists think this may be due to cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke that enter the blood and damage the pancreas. The good news?
