GRADE DISTRIBUTION: 5-hour tests 5/6, Final exam 1/6

GRADING POLICIES

Exams: Five one-hour announced tests will be given during the semester that will account for 5/6 of the semester grade. These tests will be given as indicated in the course outline. If it becomes necessary to deviate from this outline, changes will be announced at least two class periods prior to the exam. Each student must take a cumulative final exam at the time scheduled by the college in order to receive a satisfactory grade in this course. The final exam will account for 1/6 of the semester grade.

HOMEWORK AND ATTENDANCE

Two of the most important things you can do to assure success in a mathematics course are to complete all homework assignments on time and attend all classes. Therefore, if you have no absences and have received credit for all homework assignments for the class periods prior to the unit test, points will be added to your grade on the unit test. Points will be added as follows.

MAT 1033 5 points

MAC 1105 4 points

MAC 1114 3 points

MAC 1140 3 points

To receive credit for homework the assignment must be complete, all required work must be shown, and the homework must be turned in on the due date unless other arrangements are made. I will excuse two late papers during a testing period. To receive credit for attendance you must have no absences during the testing period. Remember that three tardies may count as one absence. If you are absent because of an official college activity you will not be penalized as long as all homework is completed on time. No additional extra credit work will be assigned.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

If you miss a test for a substantiated, excused reason your final exam score will be used for the grade on that test. However, if you have a documented schedule conflict (e.g. school activities; court appearance, etc.) and contact the instructor prior to a scheduled test it may be possible to arrange to take the test with another class. If you should miss a second test for a substantiated, excused reason you will be allowed to take a make-up test. The make-up exam will cover the same material as the test missed, but will not be the same test. It is your responsibility to contact the instructor the first day you return to the campus to arrange for the make-up exam. This exam must be taken within one week after returning to class or within the time specified by the instructor in case of extended absence. Failure to make

these arrangements will result in an automatic zero for the missed test. You will not be allowed to make up a test missed for an unexcused reason and will be allowed only one make-up test per semester.

ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE

Assignments can be found each semester at the instructor’s web site linked via the Course Outline and Handouts and/or will be announced during each class period.

The Instructor's web page contains links to printable copies of the class handouts along with extra practice materials for most exams. The web site, www.interactmath.com, may be a helpful resource.

EXTRA HELP IN MATH LAB: There are tutors in ACE.

MATH DEPARTMENT ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY

Math Department attendance policy states that any student who accumulates more than ten absences will automatically fail this course. An appeal may be made in writing to an appeal committee. This appeal may or may not be approved. This instructor may count three tardies as one absence.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY

If you officially withdraw from a course, a "W" will appear in place of a grade. Withdrawing from class must be done officially. Merely to stop attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal. Any student who needs to withdraw from this course should obtain the necessary forms from the Registrar's Office. Students who do not follow these procedures will receive a grade of "F" at the end of the semester.

ACADEMIC HONOR CODE: Students are expected to do their own work with integrity. Cheating which includes (but is not limited to) copying homework, looking or attempting to look at another student’s exam, giving the answers to an exam to another student either during the exam or after the exam is given, using notes or a calculator when prohibited on an exam will not be tolerated and will result in a reduced or failing grade. See page 47 in the Chipola Catalog.

Classroom Conduct:

--Cell phones are not to be used during class, and should be cut off and put up before class begins.

--If you leave the classroom for any reason during class, do not return to class for the rest of the hour.

--Only students REGISTERED in this course may sit in class.

--Please finish all eating and drinking before class begins.

The password required for access to this software comes free with every new textbook, or may be purchased separately from the Chipola Bookstore. The assignments for each unit must be completed and submitted electronically to the instructor prior to the scheduled exam for that unit. The total points earned on these assignments will be converted to a percent and will account for 1/7 of the student's total grade.
