Character Education is a key to our whole class. The following will be taught and stressed each day of the L.M.S. course: respect, courage, caring, integrity, perseverance, responsibility, and self-discipline.
Service Project- Doing for others is a great opportunity to develop a HABIT OF THE HEART.
SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT (10 hours required outside of the school day)
-During the unit, Caring for Our World, each student will select a non-profit organization from a list given out in class to give of their time. I require students to select specific organizations that meet the criteria of “service learning” and truly meet a need in our community, to make it an organized and meaningful experience for every student.
Examples:
-Juvenile Diabetes Foundation-Samaritan Ministries
-Goodwill-BestChoiceCenter
-Food Bank of NW NC, inc. -Human Service Alliance
-Salvation Army-Crisis Control
-Food Drives (held for various organizations)-Hospice
-Keep Winston-Salem/N.C. Beautiful-KDPDC

-YMCA/YWCA-Local Recreation Centers
-Glenn High Beautification-Organized neighborhood clean-ups
SCHOOL SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT (required) -Campus clean up/beautification during class on selected days.

Agenda grading procedure:
Random agenda book checks will be made to assure student use for organization, planning, etc. (This includes writing down all homework assignments, test dates, and project due dates in each of your four classes!)
Absences:
Student will have 10 points deducted from his/her participation grade for each absence until an excused/unexcused note is returned and all work is completed for the absence. Students who miss 6 or moredays of class in the semester will receive an attendance contract. This will be issued by the teacher at his/her discretion. The contract should be signed by the student and parent and returned to the teacher. The contract is valid whether the student has signed it or not. At that point student absences are only permitted for the following reasons, but must have official documentation (not a parent note) TURNED IN THE NEXT DAY AFTER THE ABSENCE: Illness or injury, death in the family, court appearance, Quarantine, medical appointments, religious observance, pre-approved educational opportunity.
