Reporting to:Technical Services Manager / Technical Tem Leader
Purpose of the New Role:
To train as a technician within the School of Biosciences to support both teaching & research activities. This post will primarily provide support within the Food Sciences subject area of the School although this may be subject to change depending on the School’s operational requirements in the future.
Main Responsibilities / % time per year1. / To become competent in providing a technical support service to a number of research groups, learning specific skills such as basic equipment maintenance, instrument function checks, restocking of consumables, preparation of stock reagents & general laboratory housekeeping to deal with their very diverse needs, completing tasks to appropriate time and quality requirements.
Assistance with setting up laboratory classes as required. / 30%
2. / Instruction of staff & students (after training) in some of the basic laboratory techniques carried out in the division including Food Preparation, Food component analysis and micro/molecular biological analysis of food safety. / 30%
3. / Learn and understand the importance of Heath & Safety within the School and the University.
To be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the School and University Health and Safety policy.
To be able to demonstrate the ability to complete risk assessments, standard operating procedures, appropriate waste disposal, accurate record keeping and stock control. / 20%
4. / To undertake and complete a suitable college course throughout the training period with a view to completing an NVQ qualification.
To create and maintain a training log book over the duration of the apprenticeship period to record skills learned and projects worked on. / 20%
5. / Any other duties appropriate to the role of an apprentice

Essential / DesirableQualifications/ Education / 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including GCSE English, Maths & a relevant sciences subject (Grade A-C)
